Dark ruby/purple colour. Aromas of dark chocolate, black cherry, black plums, fresh cut flowers, licorice. Full-bodied, rich, with replays from nose. Moderate-long finish, 35-40s, with black fruit. Needs another 2 years in the cellar. 88 points for now, could go as high as 91 with time (02/24/2005).

2001 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre (WIML88,WA89,NOWS)

Tasted September 20, 2005 at home with a dinner of Chicken Saltimbucca. Color was dark plum, slightly opaque. Nose of freshly roasted coffee and some brett with a little bit of a green twing in there. Earth frame dominated by black licorice with some bitter dark chocolate notes. Drink now. Recommended.

(notes refer to the 2000...) Have opened two of these in the past month and both drank quite well - with lots of brite (slightly sour) cherry fruit - nice acidity - medium body and color - a real crowd pleaser - not a lot of depth but a good quaff just the same. Its drinking just fine now and (based on previous vintages - I've been drinking these since the '97) I don't see why it won't hold up for a few...always a wine I look foreward to opening and drinking and both of the bottles entirely met expectations - great QPR (at about $14/15 per). I have around 6-7 of the 2000 remaining and have purchased (but not yet opened) one or two of the 01s. I have found that this wine has been pretty consistant - with perhaps the 97 being the best I've had and the 2000 drinking (somewhat) better now then the 98s and 99s ever did - seems just a bit fuller bodied - but in the same ballpark.

2001 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre (WIML89,WA89,NOWS)

Opened and splash decanted before serving immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Rot Wein glasses. Ruby color in the glass, fairly clear hue throughout. Slightly subdued nose of smoke, black cherries and a bit of dried herbs or possibly some mint. A little black licorice showed up later. Flavors of bing cherry abd balsa wood (don’t ask). Still a fairly pleasant QPR although not showing quite as well as the last bottle tasted. Drink now, maybe over the short but doubtful. Recommended still.

Note: the cork was fairly well saturated to the top. Hopefully it was one bottle only.

2001 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT - Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT (8/15/2006)
WIML88,PURPLE87,WA89,WS90

Tasted August 15, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately without decanting in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, slightly opaque or cloudy. Nose of black berries and black cherries with maybe some dried herbs. Flavors of black cherries, black berries, reaspberries and a little bitters. Medium acidity tannins and body. Drink now. Based on my local COSTCO price of $15.55 I’d say the value here is agreeable. (88 pts.)

Dark ruby in color - juicy, fruity nose of dark fruits and herbs - it sort of reminds me of what a hypothetical Italian Cotes du Rhone would taste like. Soft and pilant, but with good structure and acidity - very nice. (88 pts.)

Well I've finally (as of a few months ago) gotten into my 01s (have had 2-3 over the last 3 months)...and while still a good wine and a great value (I bought a bunch...!) I'd say the 01 is not quite up to the 2000 - its a bit thinner and more acidic...the 2000 had a bit more rich fruit and denisty (just by a bit..still its close - but a noticble drop IMO. I can understand the Cotes du Rhone analogy - its right there with the (somewhat soft) fruit, acidity and (moderate at best) density.

2001 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT - Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT (7/2/2007)
WIMLNR,PURPLENR,WA89,WS90

Tasted July 3, 2007 at home. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Garnet color in the glass, cloudy throughout. Nose of raspberries, red plums and red currants. Flavors of red berries and Bing cherries. Light to medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium body. Both PURPLE and myself think this bottle was either slightly off or suffered from poor storage somewhere along the supply chain so we’re withholding a rating. NR (flawed)
