| | Had this last night with Pasta and sauce. Opened 15 minutes before drinking, had 3 glasses over 2 hours. The color was a slightly cloudy medium crimson/ruby color. The nose had some cherry, vanilla, anise. The mouth feel was medium bodied and round, initially cherry flavors, black licorice finished with some tannins slightly short on the finish. As the wine opened up the flavor became more candied cherry with some vanilla and red licorice but the finish became some what thin and simple. I vacu-vined about a glass and a half and will see what happens tonight. This is a good wine, but was expecting a little more on the order of the Terrebianca, but it never quite got there. The wines flavor changes and initial tightness seemed to me would make it a good candidate to hold for another year or more just not sure if it will fill out on the finish or not. I would give this 88-89 pts as it is drinking right now. | | | |

| | Update on day 2, wine softened further but really didn't offer anything new. Actually stayed rather simple, I won't buy any more in the near $40 price. This wine would be good for about 1/2 that. | | | |

| Frankie - Two words "Terrebianca Campaccio" $10-$15 less and blows this wine away IMHO.
I don't understand the Casalferro, maybe my expectations were to high, maybe a bad bottle or dumb faze. I'm not sure, I have seen others rave about in WS Forum. If any one else on this forum has another opinion on this one I would love to hear it too. I didn't think this was bad, I would drink it again just wouldn't buy it again based on QPR.

| | i posted notes about the 1997 vintage recently. i gave it an 89+, but thought it was better on release. i had the 99 last october in tuscany and found it to be a big tannic wine that tended to over power the fruit. it was a dark ruby purple color. i thought it was an 88 point wine. i am concerned that the fruit may not be able to keep up with the tannins. the wine i remember sounds a little different than what you just drank. btw, this wine was available in tuscany for about $24 including taxes. | | | |

| I thought this wine fared much better when I had a bottle last September. Here are my notes:
To sum it up, simply beautiful. Deep garnet, slight pinky-purple rim; nice legs. Jammy nose with a bit of spice and cinnamon and cocoa. Big plum and a hint of chocolate on the mouth. Juicy and unctuous, it was quite the wine. 93-94 points. I decanted it for 45 minutes before drinking, and it really evolved over the next hour. Glad that I have three more bottles to watch this bottle mature.
Maybe you had an off bottle or it started to close down a bit? I know JS suggested a drinking window of 2004-2009 ...

| i agree calcabs, i like the terrabianca too, both the 97 and 99.
ojeffso, i saw your post on the 97 and i believe i commented, because i was not overly impressed with the 97 either, surprising, since i've found few 97 STs i haven't liked. i have no more 97, but still have a 98 and the aforementioned 99. i'm not expecting miracles.

| | Ojeffso- Thanks for the post,as for my notes differing from yours is it the flavors or the body of the wine? I will say the flavors the fruit especially seemed to come and go. I have found I may not judge tannins the same as others unless they really make me pucker. This wine definitely has a somewhat drying aftertaste but I found the overall mouthfeel to be fairly round. I really only found about a 1/2 glass where I could say that I enjoyed the fruit and it seemed to be coming around but then it clamped back down. Maybe it is abundance of tannins that was causing this, and then I will agree that I don't think the fruit is ever going to win. At least our scores our in the ball park. I was really hoping for another Campaccio and just didn't get it. | | | |

| Popped open another bottle of Casalferro when WIML was in town last month.
Dark ruby-red/garnet colour. Aromas of vanilla, black cherry, tar, earth, and raisin. Palate replays from nose, but adds hints of mocha. Moderate length finish, ~ 30s. 90 points (02/20/2004).
An excellent wine, but simply outclassed by the 1998 Podere Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione and 2002 Loring Gary's Vineyard Pinot Noir.

| Had this last night and this time I tried it without some hearty food. This wine really needs some good food to shine. I have had the last 5 vintages of this wine and have always enjoyed it. I have 1 bottle left and will wait another 12-18 months before I try again. THe color was a dark ruby. This wine has a large amount of tannin that will integrate somewhat but I do not think will fully integerate to the point that it will be a 93+ point wine. I would rate this wine 90 pts, and requires some hearty food. I just got a lead on some of the 2000 for $25. I am going to get some at that price.
IW
BTW the current importer of this wine did not renew their contract with this winery. It will be interesting to see who picks them up. I noticed parker rated the '01 version of this 92pts. Anyone had the '01 yet?

| IW,
I haven't even seen the 2000 here yet, so who knows if we're getting the 2001. *shrug*

| | Sangiovese and Merlot. Dark ruby colour, almost opaque. Aromas of black licorice, black cherry, vanilla, coffee, mocha, truffle, violets. Full-bodied, beautiful wine, with blackberry, black plums, vanilla. Still young and tannic. Moderate finish, 30-35s, with black fruits. Needs another 2 years. 92 points (02/19/2005). | | | |

| We opened this at the DC Crü dinner at Brasserie Beck in Washington DC. It was decanted for about an hour before drinking.
I found it to be well balanced, with plums and vanilla flavors, and very well integrated tannins. Still a dark purple in the decanter, it was medium bodies with a fairly long finish of about 30 seconds. An excellent wine and for the price I paid, a steal. 91 pts.
