| Name: Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Vintage: 1997
Country: Italy Region:Tuscany
Purchased at: Wine Seller, Williamsburg, VA Cost: $53
Color: Purple Nose: Black fruit, hints of cedar and licorice Palette: Well integrated fruit and chewyn tannins. Finish so long I'm still tasting it.
Comments: Decanted, but still tight after 2 hours. Third hour no help. Fifth hour, opened into an most excellent wine. Big, muscular, best length in some time.

| | Wow, sounds like a nice bottle. A little more time recommended before opening it? | | | |

Isn't that uncomfortable? I also imagine it could lead to some "cooked" wine

| | I think the 97 brunellos might just be starting to open up, we had a few in Italy that were very good. | | | |

| | Yeah, I'd say this could use some more time. Drinking it early was like driving 20 mph in a card that really wants to run. You could tell it was gonna just take off. | | Visit The Butcher Block at http://www.butcherblocktampa.com/ | |

I agree with Tony. It gives them an nice "essence of brett". | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| Tasted at theFebruary BAWE Tuscan event...
In reviewing my notes to type this up I am actually shocked this wine didn’t receive any votes at this tasting, as I found it to be very nice indeed. Medium ruby in color, with a beautiful complex nose offering notes of cherry and vanilla. Fresh acidity and ample ripe tannins on the palate, this wine is quite young and needs time for the tannins to integrate. Finishes medium in length.

| I had this wine on Boxing Day last year and was totally disappointed. Nice nose, pleasent enough flavour but absolutely no length. Maybe 1 or 2 seconds MAX! then 'poof' it was gone. One of the major disappointments over the christmas period. I must have had an off bottle or else it was totally shut down, as all of your tastings totally differ to mine. | | | |

| | I have one single bottle of the Banfi 1997 so I'm not going to go doing any testing on it just yet. I think my total holding on Brunelli 1997 is seven so I'm not in the market for playing about with them. | | | |

| I too only have one bottle of this. You sure do feel a lot of pressure when you've only got one chance to get it right! | | | |

| | Well, there are certainly different levels of "corked." From my experience with this wine, length was never an issue, and "pleasant enough" doesn't describe the palate of this wine either in my opinion. But, who knows... that's why I love this hobby. ;-) | | If you drink wine, you get smarter.... | |

| - 1997 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (3/17/2007)
Close to a 92; It had a slightly horsey and red fruit initial aromas along with some secondary plum and espresso flavors. The wine was well-balanced and ready to drink. I was surprised that this bottle was any good at all as the cork showed signs of leakage. Given the controversy surrounding this wine it was a pleasant surprise as previous tastings were not anything close to this bottle. There is probably some pretty large bottle variation with this wine given its large production. Good wine. [Decanted 15 minutes and continued to improve after opening; ~$45 on release] (91 pts.)

| First of all, I can't believe we're at the 10 year mark of this wine. It seems like it was just released yesterday!
I am of the mind to let all of my '97 brunellos leep for another 5-6 years. Don't think there's much harm in my doing so.

| Don't think there's much harm in my doing so. Certainly not. Of the 97s we own this one is marked to go this year. Now that I noticed the leakage on the first bottle the others will follow pretty soon. A good wine but not a blockbuster as some of the other 97s might be. | | | |
