100% Sangiovese (Lamole clone)

My third of four bottles that I opened when WIML was in town last month.

Not decanted, but allowed to breathe for an hour. Medium-dark ruby red to a rose rim. Aromas of tar, vanilla, grilled meat, violets, mint, black cherry, fenocchio, and a bit of raisining. Medium-full bodied, silky smooth, refined wine with tar, black cherry, mocha. Well integrated tannins, and a long, lingering finish, ~ 45-50s with mocha and cherries. Drinking wonderfully now! 93 points (02/20/2004).

What a wonderful wine! I hope I get the opportunity to visit Juri Fiore and the Scalette estate when I am in Italy in a couple months.

At the time we tasted this together I pegged it right at 91 points myself so we're definitely in the same ballpark. My problem is I haven't been able to locate this since I returned to the U.S.

Dark ruby/black colour; opaque. Aromas of vanilla, spice, violets, morel mushrooms, tar, and fennel. Full-bodied, lush wine, with vanilla, blackcurrant, black plums, and mint. Moderate-long finish, 35-40s, with black fruit. 91 points (06/18/2005).

1998 Podere Poggio Scalette Alta Valle della Greve Il Carbonaione (WIML91,WA91,WS91)

Tasted September 29, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. This wine was brought by us. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. The nose had an odd funk to it when first poured that eventually blew off within 15 minutes or so. Just like the last time I had this wine I got some aromas of dark fruits, cassis and black licorice. Flavors have morphed a little to show red cherries with just a whisper of mocha. Drink now. Recommended.

Glad to see it's still drinking well. Have you been able to source more recent vintages of this wine?

Nope. It's almost like it got pulled out of our market after the 1998 vintage.
