1996 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (4/13/2007)
WIML95,NOWA,WS93

Tasted April 13, 2007 at an offline. Opened about 30-minutes to an hour without decanting before serving. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of pears, whetstones, citrus fruits and eventually with more time opened a little brioche. Flavors of apples, lychee, peach and some steely minerality as well. Crisp and youthful acidity, medium to full bodied. Obviously a very young Champagne. I’d recommend holding myself. (95 pts.)

Good move in my humble opinion...especially after tasting that 1982 and seeing the upside potential in such a good year.

Somehow one of these slipped in the queue.

If you like fine Champagne this is a must wine to have in the cellar even at the current prices.   This wine will most likely disappear from the general market by the end of the year IMHO.  Superb!!

Very light gold in color; 96+ points; Much has been said about this wine so I can't add a lot but to say WOW. Citrus and slight pear aromas. Complex and focused with lemon fruit and a long, chalky, minerally finish. This wine was very young and acidic with numerous but incredibly tiny bubbles. This screamed for caviar and/or sashimi. WOW. (96 pts.)

The dish that lit up this champagne was this:

hama chili

yellowtail sashimi with ponzu, sliced thai chilis and orange supremes - the citrus in this with the slight hint of heat was amazing

Another sashimi dish had golden tobiko (fish eggs) that were also great.  I almost ordered just the tobiko but the Salon ran out about that time.

Ha! Guess they weren't buried that deep in the cellar, eh?

Hi WT, would you say this is the best of the 1996 vintage bubblies?

So far. It was so focused and lovely. There are a couple of others that might be better but it is pretty subjective. The 96 Krug should be there but not yet. The 96 Dom hit those heights but I haven't had it in a while.

Here are my top 96s with most of the top cuvees tasted:
1996 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs
1996 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon
1996 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon Rose
1996 Taittinger Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne

The time is approaching for a 1996 Champagne Smackdown. There are some folks about to do it on the Parker board and I'm fairly interested in the results.

That's a nice list Tex. I'm holding on to my 1996s until 2011 to start opening them, but your notes make it difficult!

Just like any vintage the 96s are maturing at different rates. There are two in particular that I think are firmly in their drinking window right now. Esp. the Egly.

1996 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année
1996 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

I had a happy day a couple of weeks ago when I "found" 3 bottles of the 96 Bolly GA in my cellar that I did not have in inventory. Yaaaayyyyy!!! Wish I could find some 96 Krug.....LOL
