From a 2 night anniversary party last month.

the single vineyard Blanc de Blanc that, in my estimation has almost no peers. Clos du Mesnil, originally called Clos Tarin, is the 1.87ha Chardonnay vineyard located in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil. Its grapes were a source Salon for many years until it was bought by Krug in 1971 and was immediately replanted. Being 17 years old for the 1988 vintage, these vines are giving some absolutely blockbuster fruit. The nose is just as intense as the Bollie with a huge ripe white fruits, mostly apples, some honeysuckle and hazelnuts together with doughy notes. The palate is full and rich, full of tons of fruit and rich with texture without being burdensome. Even with this richness, the wine has a very velvety and elegant nature, awesome balance. It has tremendous structure of acidity and fruit that it will certainly be legendary after 8-12 years and beyond.

I'm Glad you mentioned Salon. How do you find the Krug to compare? I've never had a bottle of it, but have had Salon back to '82. Hands down, the 1990 Salon was the best Champagne I've ever had, but the '88 and '82 were close.

I've had the Salon 1982, 1985, 1988, and 1990 and much prefered the 1988 Krug Clos du Mesnil. The Krug is just a fantastic powerful Champagne. The best I've ever had (went through two excellent bottles last year).

I have had the same vintages that Skwid listed and the 1988 Clos du Mesnil bested those easily. I do love Salon though.
