NV Bollinger Brut Champagne Special Cuvée (WIML90,WA89,WS93)

Tasted October 8, 2005 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in Riedel Champagne Flutes. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of toast, pear, yellow apple and later one a little yeast. Flavors of yellow apple, Anjou pear, a little citrus and then some hazelnut on the finish. Drink over the short term. Recommended.

$32.00, Retail.

We had a bottle of this tonight. A nice little bottle, better with food (also mentioned by Winetex above) but not so by itself.

It start out very nice & tasty, but it does not follow through on the promise. Very enjoyable though & a little grassy. Still we had a good time with it. And, it went quickly into the night...

Rating: 88 points.

I think Bollinger is on a new release of their NV. I had a case or so of it that was just awesome. Recent bottles have not been as good. We need to crack Bollinger's release codes so we can know for the future.

We had this bottle tonight. I have to say it is not 1 of my fav N/Vs. A bit too much on the acidity, a bit flat, & simple, very simple. I've had better N/Vs over the years & for less money. It is not a bad bottle of wine, but not to my style I guess. I see above most posters liked it more than I liked it.

Tonight an 87, I had a bottle a few months ago & that was an 88.

LCC - the quality of the wines differs from year-to-year and subsequently in the lots. My local source ran out of the good lot we were drinking through and I haven't yet restocked.

Yeah, I realize that Winetex, you mentioned it to me in the past. That's the "problem" with the N/V bubblies, I guess, you never know what you are drinking (sort of speak).

Note the different lot numbers on these bottles if you are wondering how the bottles compare. About the same quality but slightly different presentations.  Yes, I am a wine geek and a champagne slut for sure.

  • N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut - France, Champagne (7/31/2008)
Lot L724004 on the foil; More aromatic than previous bottles. This bottle also had more of a "sweetness" although I think this was fruit vs. dosage. One of the best NVs for my taste and food pairings. (91 pts.)

  • N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut - France, Champagne (3/21/2008)
Lot L714303 on the foil; this lot seems to be pretty good. Definitely the bold Bolly style with some nice ginger notes. (91 pts.)

  • N.V. Bollinger Champagne Special Cuvée Brut - France, Champagne (9/29/2007)
Lot L625603 on the foil; This bottle wasn't very good, possibly flawed or heat-damaged.

Interesting Winetex. I love this kind of stuff. Based on lot numbers and tasting dates can I presume that with bottle one you likely bought one that had been sitting there too long, the second bottle was much closer to release date and BINGO! with the last bottle you must of hit upon a freshly released stash?

Yes, very likely. This last lot has a richness that the others lacked. Maybe less acid. Tasty!!!

I bought them at Whole Foods. With a 10% mixed six-pack discount the price is $44 pb.

I'll check that out. I know that wine+art and just a skosh recently told me to check out the Bolly at Whole Foods as well. For some reason they seem to have one of the better prices in town!
