| This was my first taste of Pinot Gris and one of my few forays into Alsatian wine. Hitherto I have only tried Gewürtztraminers. I picked this wine up for GBP 7.50 (marked down from 10). According to Hugh Johnson, Pinot Gris is also called "Tokay d'Alsace".
Color: somewhere between onion skins and golden apples. Very long lasting legs on the glass. Bouquet: Not very strong, but complex - grapefruit, lychees and a hint of mustiness. Flavor: very full bodied and as sweet as a Geman spätlese. Hints of grapefruits, lychees, mushrooms and a little earth. Very lingering aftertaste.
I am used to German Riesling, and in comparing this wine to a non-dry spätlese, I would say it lacked the tart bite that usually balances a good Riesling, but made up for it with strong savory flavors. Generally, if you like German wines, I would recommend this. It went extremely well as a dessert wine with Brie and Stilton accompanied by some very high qualitiy orange marmalade.
