Going through some 98 premium cuvees to get a sense of the vintage. So far the 98s I've tasted have been good but clearly not for the long haul. Gotta have something to drink though. - 1998 Gosset Champagne Celebris Brut - France, Champagne (5/11/2008)
90+; Gold color with amber tints; This had a very aromatic nose of toffee, vanilla and red berries. Its flavors included more red berries and toast and was strangely Rose-like in character (it was NOT the Rose but has quite a bit of Pinot in the blend). An interesting Champagne with a fine mousse ; maybe low on acid but very smooth and quite nice with food. There was a perception of sweetness, not sure of the dosage but it was probably on the higher side for a Brut. This improved dramatically with food and may merit a higher score. Drinking very well now; Probably not a long-term hold (10+ years). 64% Chardonnay/36% Pinot. $$$, not the best quality for the price. (90 pts.)
