1996 Billecart-Salmon Rosé "Cuvee Elisabeth". Champagne, France. 13% alcohol. $125.
Pale pink color with a fine bead. The wine grows and grows in power and stature as it sits in the glass. Intense but graceful nose of creamy watermelon, cherry, spice, toast, minerals, and stone. Perfectly balanced with great length. Drop dead gorgeous. Drink now (2010) to 2015. 97 points.

I was just tooling around the Billecart-Salmon website and came upon a shocking (to me, anyway) discovery. This is not a true rose as I understand the term. Some of the Pinot Noir is vinified white, while some is actually vinified red. Just thought I'd share. Does 'rose' usually mean this in Champagne?

P.S. The NV Rose is also pink because some of the Pinot Noir is vinified red.

Well,

Apparently I'm a moron and this is how most Champagne houses produce roses. Still surprised me, though.
