The color was an unexpected deep gold with a very fine mousse. Powerful aromas of brioche, spice and citrus filled the glass and my nose. It was creamy and luscious through the middle with a long slightly spicy finish. In taste profile it was very close to NV Krug. Medium to heavy in weight and just superb. My yet unposted note in CellarTracker says "94 points of raging Baby Krug. Superb. WOW."

Tasted next to the 1996 Dom Perignon and while the Dom should be better with long-term aging the Egly was right with the Dom. I thought this might be a mismatch but it is good to be surprised in a good way.

94-95 Winetex (and Mr. Winetex) points; $70

There is somewhat limited availability on this wine in the USA. If you are interested check HiTime in So Cal. Everyone in the CSC should be a buyer on this one.

From what I can tell this winery released their 1997 vintage prior to the 1996 vintage. This bottle was disgorged in July of 2004.

Your TN is dead on for this wine. Egly-Ouriet also makes a great NV bubbly and a Blanc de Noirs (at the same price) that I am intrigued to try.

Tasted again last night with the same results. I have the rest of these offsite and don't plan on opening another for a year. I think it will continue to improve.

Had a bottle of this a few weeks ago, and it was drinking beautifully. Of course a few years will coax out all the great characteristics of a vintage bubbly, but it is hard to resist now. A wonderful match to seared scallops topped with caviar.

This champagne is great with sushi. It was perhaps the best deal in vintage champagne of any merit at around $70 per bottle. Buy it if you find it.

I should have bought two cases of this at $45 when I had the chance.

Uh, yup. If you ever see it again under $75 I'd be happy to take some off of your hands. Luscious stuff.

A check on the web shows a couple of locations with stock of this wine - Chambers Street Wineslink in NYC has it for $78.99 with a 10% case discount. CSC take a look.

Yeah, I could have gotten it close to cost. I think the next vintage release should be sometime this fall. I may be able to get some at a great price, since the sales manager of the importer around here is a great friend of mine. I wonder if it will be 1997, 1998 or 1999.

Now a deep gold color with hazlenet flavors.  Further along than other 96s and ready to go.  Yum.  One of my best wine buys - hindsight always being 20/20.

Winetex, do you know if Egly-Ouriet produced a different vintage 1996 from the Millesime bottling?  I swear I saw this at retail earlier today for an excellent price and, given the vintage, I thought about grabbing a couple...but now much later at home I can't recall more than the producer's name and the vintage.

Vine, not sure about that but there is a chance. Egly did very well in 1996 so if the price is good I would pick them up. There are a number of Egly vintage cuvees in CellarTracker but many of them are duplicates because people have an inability to search for and enter the right wines. **pet peeve but I've done this**

I received this in mag as a gift from TFL, looking forward to trying it.
