  • 2000 Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Gris Les Princes Abbes - Alsace, France (12/8/2004)
Pineapple and coconut dominate this wine. Unfortunately it is a bit too cloyingly sweet. There was not enough acidity for it for a crisp finish. Good quality but not a repeat buy for me.

[$15; Served with mild Indian food] (87 pts.)

Winetex,

Thanks for your note.

I just had the '99 version on Friday and thought that it also lacked acidity, although there was not as much bortrytis as you seem to be noting in the '00. I would rate it 86P. Probably won't purchase this bottling again either.

Cheers,

Otis

I've had the Schlumberger Princes Abbés Gewurtztraminer from a couple of vintages, and had about the same feeling as both of you did about the PG: not impressed.

I'm pretty sure the Princes Abbés is the entry-level Schlumberger label (I understand they bottle some Grand Cru PG, but I've never tried, or even seen, them) even though the label makes it look almost like a vineyard designation. Nifty piece of marketing, I guess.

It was worth a try-and-buy. I was looking for an Alsatian that was less $$ and more available than the Weinbachs (which I really like).

There was a Schlumberger on the same shelf that was ~$40 so they definitely make higher-level wines.

Yes, they have Grand Cru level wines. I like their Riesling Grand Cru Saering. It usually has very nice fruit and mineral notes and the last one I had was pretty dry, so if the sweetness in the PG bothered you, maybe you should try this one.

Agree, try the Saering Riesling. The '00 was really nice and was on sale here in Portland for $17 or so, which was a nice deal. Not sure if that price is available in other markets, but it was a solid wine for the price.

Marshall - welcome to VinoCellar and thanks to all who responded on this thread. I'll see if they have the Riesling.
