Rumor has it that Parker has given it 98 points.
I disagree. I thought it was only a 97+.

This stuff is good. Can somebody give a real tasting note please?

a. How long will this keep in the old cellar?
b. Approx retail price?

This stuff should keep 20 years easily.

My reco would be to buy as much as you think you will drink in the next two years. Say you drink a bottle for you and your SO's birthday, another for an anniversary, one on Thanksgiving, one on Christmas and one on New Years. That's six bottles assuming you will only consume one bottle at each of these events. Two years=12 bottles. After two years look around and buy some more of it for undoubtedly a lot more money or buy something new.

Going price is about $100. I understand there will be a price increase sometime soon of approx. $15. If you buy a case (12) you should be able to get a 10% discount. That takes it to $90. Skwid bought some for $85 but I believe that was a special circumstance and is not available any more (correct me if I am wrong skkwid). Besides you want to buy the stuff from someone local. You don't want to buy it for $5 less somewhere and then pay $6 for shipping.

I will say this... it tastes pretty good. You are paying $100 for a special occasion wine and it does taste special. And not only does it taste good... you get to say "Dom Perignon". That is special too.

I purchased it fairly locally (Concord CA) but did have the Champagne delivered. I think it was about $13 for the sixpack. There are still four bottles available according to the bevmo web site. I got a 10% discount with a coupon.

Parker sez: 98 points. You need an erobertparker subscription, but the review starts with this sentence: "I have had a lot of great vintages of Dom Perignon, but I do not remember any as impressive as the 1996."

Even if it winds up in the bins of our local Costco, you can bet it will be priced over $100.

I checked in some shops here in NJ... nothin', nada, zilch... Any ideas on how to get some?

Some of the Costcos also received the '96 and they are mixed with the 95s.

LCC - most of the west coast stores have this for under $100 pb. Go for a case discount and then you can relay to some of the other east coasters. I bought mine from Sam's in Chicago before the prices went up.

I just read the Parker review. Is "Wheat Thins" a common descriptor or does it only get used for 98 pt champagnes?

"Wheat thins" is not a commonly used descriptor for 98 point champagne. Usually you see brioche or another bready descriptor. It's really kind of funny.

Maybe he's leaning toward more, uhhhh, domestic, descriptors?
