| 1993 R. Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Chaignots -- when you get a great Premier Cru red Burgundy, you really do get a taste of what the Grand Crus can provide. This was one of those rare times when a Premier Cru outperformed our expectations. Right from the big cherry and coffee nose, this wine promised wonderful things, and came through. Extremely silky and caressing in the mouth, with sweet ripe cherry, berries, coffee, mushrooms that all hang on in a very long finish. Full-bodied, fairly hefty on the palate. A wine to make you forget the last half-dozen disappointments from Burgundy. Fabulous to drink. App. 94 pts., but really WANTS to be 95+. Showing all it has today, I think. | | |

| Chevillon is a very trustworthy producer. His premier crus from Les St Georges, Les Vaucrains, and Les Cailles are considered better then the Chaignot. You might want to give them a try if you see them. Chevillon is particularly good in off vintages. Kermit Lynch in Berkeley imports Chevillon wines into the US. | | | |

| I know that Chaignot is generally considered his weakest bottling, but a trusted retailer talked me into this purchase, despite a shelf talker (quoting either Parker/Rovani or WS, can't recall which now) that said it got 89 pts. He had had it 3 or 4 times, and said it would be outstanding. Turns out he was right; I bought 2 bottles, drank the other in 2000 which led me to believe it still had time. I also bought 4 Vaucrains, of which I've had 2, and it's similar but with more berry fruit flavors.
I have Vaucrains and Les St. Georges from the '95 and '96 vintages, but other than a small taste at purchase time, haven't cracked one yet. It's unfortunate for me that the shop which used to import Chevillon no longer does so. This has been the best buy from Burgundy (is that an oxymoron?) for me since Faively premier crus of '89 and '90.

| An 89 point rating can be a great bottle of Burgundy. Much more so imo than any other varietal. | | | |

| Agreed. I would suggest that your comment might in fact apply to Pinot Noir, not only those from Burgundy.
The '93 Chaignot is a large and clear step above that, however, by anyone's standards.

| i've taken jones advice on this producer a couple times. grabbed a 2000 roncieres, even tho it's supposedly an off vintage. also have a 96 and had the 99 at fifth floor in SF. got on the kermit lynch mailer to get the 2002 futures for chevillon to load up for anniversary drinking. i'm looking forward to drinking a few aged chevillons down the road a bit. | | | |
