Though I've long forgotten the producer, a bottle of '69 Clos St. Denis was the wine that changed my view of wine forever, and not just Burgundy. We drank it on New Year's Eve in either '74 or 75, and I still remember the amazement that I felt by how layered the wine was, with earth and cherry fruit similar to what you had noted. It really opened my eyes to the sensory joys that wine can bring.
As has been discussed in wine forums many times, it was one of those experiences that we all try to re-capture, but I never really have. However, I still have kind of a soft spot for this vineyard, based on emotion not intellect

, and so have wasted money a few times with disappointing purchases of CSD in hopes of reliving that moment. C'est la vie.
