This was a Garagiste pick up. Chiroubles is farther up in the hills than most of the other Cru Beaujolais, so it tends to be slightly lighter than most of the other Crus. Around Chiroubles, I was amazed at 1) how steep the hills are, and 2) how short the head-pruned vines are - the vines can't be over three feet tall. Harvest must be back-breaking work! The wine had the tell-tale aroma of young Gamay - cherries and roses with a combination of sweet phenolics and wood. On the palate, the wine is light and refreshing, with cherry flavors dominating. Good balance and mid-palate, with a smooth and long finish that invites another sip. I doubt this is a long-term ager, but is sure is delicious now.
