  • 2005 Barat Chablis 1er Cru Les Fourneaux - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (1/9/2008)
Aromas of lime, very ripe yellow fruits and chalk - there is richness of fruit on the palate which envelops the mouth with the mineral flavor and a pleasant bitterness on the finish. Structurally I think this wine lacks the focus of previous vintages like 2004 and 2002, and even though the flavor components are in good quality the lack of structure is sorely missed. (87 pts.)

I used to sell Barat, it was the only Chablis in the portfolio I represented. Unfortunately I never really cared for them, which sucks since I love Chablis and I could buy them at big discounts off the wholesale price.

I think this wine when it is on, is a decent $20-22 bottle of wine. Unfortunately Chablis without the steely structure is really not worth drinking. What are your favorite Chablis producers (besides the obvious Raveneau and Dauvissat presumably)? Any affordable bottlings that you tend to like?

On the affordable side I enjoy:

Fevre 1er Cru
Roland Lavantureux
Laurent Tribut
de Moor
Olivier Savary
Louis Michel - actually enjoy their village/1er more than their GC (oak treatments)

Thanks - I should give Fevre and Michel a chance. A few years back I tried some Fevres and found them pretty oaky (or were they Vergets?) and crossed them off the list.

The other producers I do not see around here.

And I hear you about working wholesale - I could have purchased a lot of wines at wholesale cost, but when you taste wines all day all week, the need to buy sort of isn't there much!

Fevre and Michel can show a good dose of oak when young on their Grand Cru's. The Premiers none to hardly any really noticeable
