EDIT: This was a 1998, not a 2005. I can't seem to edit my subject/title. Picked up as a gamble on closeout from Luke's Liquors in Brewster, MA, for $29. Who knows how long the bottle had been sitting in the store.
The cork was red 3/4 the way to the top, but otherwise was in good condition.
While the nose screams burgundy, it definitely shows more animal fur and wet earth than red fruits and minerals.
On the palate, the wine displays great midpalate richness and glycerine, average complexity emphasizing darker fruits and earth, and relatively low acidity. I was certainly expecting an underperformance tonight, but was surprised on the upside. A very enjoyable wine that will last another 5-7 years easily, probably more if cellared properly. |
