The bottle that WIML tasted above was from our lot and was the best bottle.Â

  • 2003 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru (1/9/2008)
Definitely not a great bottle and probably not a great vintage of Les Clos. The wine was good but there were some strange flavors in it. This bottle was from a lot sourced from Premier Cru with Danish labels. If you have any of these I suggest you check in on them - one of our bottles was corked, one was good and this one was a little strange. (88 pts.)

    Grossly corked. NR (flawed)

03 was an atypically ripe vintage but Raveneau Clos shouldn't be performing in the manner it is for you.  My speculation is these bottles were harmed in their travels around the world.  Generally Clos needs a fair amount of cellar time to unfurl.

Yes I agree. We also had some 2003 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre from the Danish lot from Premier Cru that I suspect were heat-damaged. Those were more obviously heat-damaged (very soaked corks) and not the wines they should have been.

Raveneau fills his bottles so high they can turn into leakers very easily.  I buy Raveneau pretty much every year (didn't buy 03 though) but I always buy them through Kermit Lynch because I worry about the fills.
