It was a nice, clear, deep purple color. On the nose it was very spicy and sweet with cherries and a candied cherry note. In the middle there was lots of spice and cherry with dimension and balance. There was good acidity and balance but little discernible tannins. It was very stylish and became floral with violets on the finish. I would characterize this one as a “feminine” pinot. It was excellent with food. This wine clearly needs time (at least two years) but I had to taste it before potentially purchasing more.
I will probably buy more because the Engels are very good wines from the 2000 vintage. The vintage seems to be inconsistent from the wines I’ve tasted to date. | | | |
