| I know a lot of you are buying this wine, so I figured I'd pop the cork to let you all know NOT TO DRINK THIS WINE FOR 5 OR 6 YEARS.
hehehehehehe.
Seriously though....quick TN from last nights memory.
Nice dark ruby red color.
Nose was muted at first, but came around with 2+ hours of air time, showing dark fruit and cloves.
On the palate was again lots of cloves (nothing new here when reading posts about the 2000) and dark fruit, dark chocolate, with an interesting strawberry streak that I noticed towards the finish. After putting the cork back in and going home, I polished off the rest.... even more complexities had come out by then.... truly this is a wonderful wine to drink..... VinoCellar members were right on with the recommendation to buy this.
Rev Rates it: 94 (took 6 hours to get to this level of enjoyment)
If you want to drink now, decant 3+ hours first.... but super enjoyment comes after 5 or so.
This is obviously a YOUNG WINE, with great structure... I won't open my next bottle for 6 yrs (if I can hold out) | |

Loads of plum, cloves, black pepper, mocha (on the nose only) and earth. Tannins were burly and acidity fairly high, both matching the fruit. Give this a good 4-12 years. jb Rating 93 pts.

This is piercing with stunning garrigue, wow! The palate is dry and structured and seems to be shutting down pretty hard compared to my last taste of this wine.

Tasted at McCarthy & Schiering. What a lovely treat to find an open bottle of this nectar when I stopped in to pick up some wine! The bottle had been open for about 75 minutes, and the nose was explosive and expressive, thick with garrigue, earth, bright fruit, exotic nuances. I was stunned to see so much complexity in such a young wine. On the palate this was wide open and singing a glorious chorus. The finish lasts for more than a minute. Wow, yet again this juice stunned me.

Initially this was slightly floral with piercing notes of licorice, but as this opened over time more floral character emerged with hints of pine. The palate shows remarkable garrigue with a broad, spreading, dusty character. This is very powerful, moving towards black and brooding but gaining some sweetness with air. The finish is long, somewhat tight, yet very powerful. Holey moley, this is an amazing wine and stunningly approachable, a real blockbuster!
DAY 2: Tasted at Scott Thornber's house. I brought the remaining half bottle from the prior evening over to Scott's. This was extremely peppery with a briary, animalistic character. On the palate and finish this is just stunning, like getting on an amusement ride. I love this juice. It probably fell off a few points, but who's counting.

| Well I just had this sucker two more times, once at Pegau and the other a bottle with Laurence Feraud's husband, Mark Fincham. It is nowhere near closed. Insanely great wine!

Tasted from bottle with Laurence Feraud at Domaine du Pégau. Just as the taste two days earlier, this showed no signs of being closed down. The wine showed stunning structure and was gamey, spicy, wile and delicious as always. This wine is just awesome right now. I had intended to let all of my bottles sleep, but I think I might pull out one more...

Tasting with Mark Fincham. To think that I thought this wine was closing down the last time I had it. Not this bottle! Popped, poured and wowed. This wine is monstrous with oodles of brawny depth on the nose, licorice and waves of briary garrigue with time to air. On the palate this is wide open, wow! White pepper and explosive, sweet fruit with unreal depth and purity. The finish is long and harmonious. We took this bottle to dinner after the tasting and it only continued to open over a four hour period. Unbelievable!

| Tasted at BAWE's August 2004 Grenache tasting...
Another terrific wine in this lineup, the nose displays dense aromas of earth, black pepper, black cherries, and cloves. On the palate this wine is clearly just a baby, and really screams to be paired with food. Nicely balanced palate, with prominent but ripe tannins, and a fine finish. | | | |

| I haven't tasted this since its release and there was a bottle of it in the wine store ready to be liberated.
My notes are consistent with Eric White's
- 2001 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, Rhône, France (11/14/2004)
Lots of black pepper, garrigue, plum and spices with great complexity. It is typical Pegau in flavor profile but is on the high end for big tannins and acidity for Pegau. It is not one of the early approachable vintages. Based on the Pegaus I've tasted over the years this one is a long term hold, perhaps even longer than the 1998. My score is based on what I ultimately think the wine will be with aging. Last night's bottle was a 92 in the moment.
[$45; Decanted one hour which was not enough; Served with an experimental pairing of homemade pot stickers and vegetables] (94 pts.)

| Had at a Rhone offline in San Diego so I figured I'd update...
Outstanding nose of leather, cigar box, strawberry, kirsch and licorice. Great concentration of red fruits and licorice on the palate with hints of white pepper and cigar. The finish was long and detailed with the earthy notes lasting over a minute. Tremendous CdP that improved after half the bottle sat overnight. 97pts. | | | |

| | I love Pegau...but am still working my way out of the 90's and haven't much touched by 00, 01, 03,04s etc...one thing I have seen concerning this particular vintage (and of course Pegau in general) - is the issue of Brett. Many seem to think that at least some bottles of this vintage are overpowering in this regard - to the point of undrinkability. I certainly understand the concern (as I have felt the 95s, 98s and 99s I've had all exhibit some of this trait (as do many othe CdPs)...but I love them just the same. Any comment? | | | |
