2004 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage La Guiraude - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage (4/28/2007)
WIML89,NOWA,WS91

Tasted April 28, 2007 at an offline. Opened and served immediately. Garnet color in the glass, slight dusty looking. Nose of bacon, licorice and herbs. Flavors of black licorice, cherries and mint. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium body. Drink or hold. (89 pts.)

Much better than their normal Crozes which was completely green and herbal, not in a oh that's just the northern rhone herbalness but in a oh I would rate that at about 80pts way.

Agreed. I couldn't have said it better myself. Bear in mind there were at least a few that disagreed.

I haven't had the La Guiraude, but the normale C-H was a tough one to drink.

There was definitely some herb in this wine. Northern Rhones are really my thing but I came in at about 88 pts on this one with some room to improve. The question is which way will it go - integrate or become "weedy"?

I've tasted both wines about a year ago and they were very 'hard' back then too - I've not had too much experience with Graillot, but a bottle of 1999 Crozes last year was quite tasty. Maybe they take a while to come around, though I would have a hard time waiting for that 2004 after tasting them.

When Crozes is on, I can always pick it up blind as it reminds me of autumn scents and flavors quiet distinctively.
