2003 Domaine St. Benoit Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (5/26/2006)
WIML83,NOWA,NOWS

Tasted May 26, 2006 at a retail tasting. Opened and served about an hour later in a Riedel Vinum Cabernet Sauvignon glass. Ruby color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Right up front on the nose I got this odd scent which I can only call “old steamer trunk” followed by some floral components and a little red fruit. Thin and singular cherry flavor on the palate with some earth on the merciful short to medium finish. Stalky tannins dominate with light acidity. Typically I’d recommend drinking a CdP many years down the road but this one should go and go now. Based on the $25.49 per bottle local retail price I’d say Benoit strikes out yet again with an unacceptable value. (83 pts.)
