2003 Domaine du Vieux-Télégraphe. Châteauneuf du Pape AOC, Southern Rhône Valley, France. 14.5% alcohol. $50. 17,000 cases made. In the context of the vintage, the 2003 VT is disappointing. It has a medium ruby red hue with scents of hot buttered raspberry, heat, and cherry liqueur. Pleasantly fruity in the mouth with decent length. Acid is low but acceptable and tannins are kept well in check (at least until the end when they make their presence felt). A nice red wine but nothing more. Generally, Vieux-Télégraphe is Grenache (70%) and Syrah (15%) with the remaining 15% consisting of Cinsault and other southern Rhone blending varietals and bottled without filtration. Drink now (2009) to 2015. 88 points.

I agree with your impressions (as we discussed in the other thread). Vieux Telegraphe's typical varietal percentages are 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault and others Have you tried the Vieux Mas Des Papes JW1 (or anyone else)...and was it different/improved? VT is generally more minerally and the VMDP is generally more fruity/forward. Seems like that would work better in 03. Premier Cru used to sell VMDP for $11/bottle at the beginning of the year....I loved that deal so I'm hoping they bring that back next year.
