| 2001 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine -- inviting deep ruby red colour, looks great in a decanter; nose reticent for about 20 minutes but opens slowly to show dark berry fruit, hint of spearmint, some lavender/garrigue notes after an hour; very full-bodied, big fruit, big acid, powerful plum and raspberry flavours, spicecake, garrigue, bit of licorice; very long finish, loaded with big tannins but lots of fruit left at the end. Really makes a statement in the mouth. In the 94-95 pt. range for me, maybe a bit more still to come. Like a lot of its vintage mates, this will improve for many years, and I already look forward to visiting it again over a piece of rare prime rib. | | |
