| 2003 Domaine de Pégau “Cuvée Réservée”. Châteauneuf du Pape AOC, Southern Rhône Valley, France. 14% alcohol. $65. Deeply pigmented with reticent though burgeoning aromas of black licorice, blackberry, high-toned smoke, airy plum, some game, and freshly churned butter. Loads of fruit with plenty of acid and strong but smooth tannin. Formidable length. A powerful wine but dexterous and lithe regardless. Very impressive structure. A stunning Châteauneuf. Drink now (2011) to 2015+. 96 points. | | | |

| Tasted at the theApril BAWE CdP tasting:
Very nice nose, with just a touch of heat showing through, this wine shows classic CdP aromas (as it turns out, this was the most “classic” example of CdP of our tasting), with notes of herbs, dark berries, guarrigue – really deep and intense, with tremendous complexity. On the palate there is still just a touch of heat, but the wine shows marvelous texture, with ripe fleshy tannins, excellent structure, dense but well balanced fruit, and tremendous character, finishing long and fine. My #1 of the flight and of the tasting

| - 2003 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (4/23/2006)
Potential for 94-96 points. I only had a brief taste but my main comment was "tastes like baby Pegau". This bottle was barely decanted and the wine was very closed. It was very balanced without any evidence of the relatively high alcohol. It should be a great Pegau. (93 pts.)

| No more of these will go to an early demise.

Again balanced, young Pegau. The only difference from the bottle a year ago and this one was a persistent charred taste on the finish. I didn't care for it and it became stronger the longer the wine sat in the decanter. Otherwise a good wine. [the rest will sleep for 5+ years] (91 pts.)

| | At this point, I like the 2001 better than the 2003. I think that these wines are far too young to judge though. I have a case of 2003 that will remain untouched for 5 years or so. | | | |

| Yes, they are definitely young. As the Pegau pimp of the Southwest I have a bunch of these and there is no point in drinking any more of them until they age more.
I agree with you that the 2001 will be the better wine. 2001 should be a very good vintage for many Southern Rhones. At least I hope.
