| This was an example of "I've already bought it so now I have to try a bottle".
- 2003 Clos du Mont Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape North Berkeley Barrel Selection - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1/24/2006)
90+; This was good wine in a completely unevolved state. It was a dark garnet color with exotic spices on the nose and throughout. There was also a very prevalent minerality which immediately came to mind as chalk. With age it will probably be more stoney. I liked the minerality but there is a lack of structure that made me knock a couple of points off the score. Quite tasty and not one of the heavyweight CDPs. It should age well but the freakiness of the 2003 vintage is an issue for scheduling drinking dates. [~$45 on release; 13% alcohol stated (no way); Decanted about 30 minutes and needed it; Next bottle scheduled for 2009] (90 pts.)

| 13% alcohol in the 2003 vintage seems virtually impossible. Did you sense any heat on the wine or a roasted quality? The roasted quality is what has been keeping me more focused on the north in 2003 than the south.

| | JB - that's what I thought (13% seems impossible). I think they threw on a standard label. This was one of the few 2003s I've tasted that didn't have obvious heat and/or that roasted quality you describe. I would say the actual alcohol level is more like 14.5%, not over 15% as some of the 2003 Rhones are reaching. | | | |
