| - 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (8/18/2005)
Night one just poured a small glass, corked the remainder and tossed it back in the cellar. Big CdP- A bit of alcohol on the nose, jammy, spicy, a touch of raisin. Lots of tannin. At this point it comes off a touch over-ripe but we shall see what comes tomorrow night.
Night two: Holy raspberry jam Batman! Alcohol is mostly integrated. Very enjoyable with a big ole T-Bone off the grill and Gruyere Potato Gratin. Holy Tannins! This is a big structured wine. At this point it still touches the overripe spectrum so I have to limit it to a 94. Definitely not something I want to see again until it has a good milimeter of dust on the bottle. (94 pts.)

| I thought it was an interesting and enjoyable experience- I certainly hope Parker is right about where this one is going- but I can certainly see why it is controversial. Makes me wish I had been able to try the 1990 wines on release. I had a bunch of 89 and 90 wines a few months ago and most were GREAT so I am really tempted to load up on some of the other recommended 03 wines - but it is not as safe a bet as the 2001's | | | |

| | Anthony, given that the prices of 2001, to a lesser extent 2000, and even 1998 really have not appreciated that much, I would highly recommend buying some of the more "classic" vintages as well. Many of the 1999's are also delicious and can be had for at or near release in many cases. | | | |

| | i agree. many of the 2003's are going to be a crap shoot and prices are too high. i will be buying very little without first tasting. | | | |

| A very wise move for this vintage, as I am finding so far.

| | As with all vintages everywhere one must pick well. In 2003 if you pick well then the upside is tremendous. | | | |

| FYI on previous vintages - Premier Cru just sent out an email with these
1998 Pegau Cuvee Laurence for $79.95
A great wine (95s from the pros) with a pretty good price. I'm in.

| | Another case in point- Premiercru has the 98 beaucastel for $70. That is a steal! I would buy more, but I am all set with this wine. | | | |

| | Yes, I paid somewhere in the 45-50 range for the bulk of mine I believe.- However that was when the Euro was worth 80 cents. Also a similarly rated bordeaux would be trading for well higher right now. Overall a good price when you consider that the 2001 was releasing in the 60-70 range in many areas. | | | |

| | Opened this one at about 4:30 and poured a small taste. Typical Grenache nose and slightly acidic. We came back to this again around 6:30 and was not showing much. Finally around 9:30 we poured a glass for everyone. Typical granache, along with a gamey smell, light fruits(strawberry and basberry?), and rasins. I fairly full bodied wine, but with noticable acid. The alcohol was not noticable. Not real sure what to make of this one. | | | |

| | Opened my first bottle of this last night and drank over 3 hours. Sweet Grenache fruit with no hint of heat. Perfumy nose filled with red fruits and a slight mineral streak on the palate. Not very complex but we'll see if that emerges in 10+ years. The rest go in the cellar. 92-93 pts right now and expecting some upside. | | | |

Sounds like your bottle showed better than mine. I think there is some incredible bottle variation on this one. It also seems like this is a wine that will not show it's best for many many years.

| | Chilly, bottle variation or different views on the same wine? I am guessing the latter. | | | |
