2003 Domaine Laurent Brusset Côtes du Rhône

Tasted October 9, 2004. Purchased at La Cave Warehouse in Dallas, TX for $17.00 per 750ml. Opened without decanting about 5 minutes before serving in Spiegelau Authentis Bordeaux Glasses. The cork was wet 2/3rds of the length, saturated the first 1/8th of an inch.

Garnet color with pretty good clarity for this unfiltered and unfined wine. I’m not certain of the blend of this wine but historically it runs approximately 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Mourvedre. The nose consisted of lilacs, forest floor, kirsch, cedarbox and coffee grounds. There was just a whisper of cocoa between swirls in the glass.

Smooth tannins played well with the balanced and refreshing acidity. The moderate fruit showed well and the alcohol was perfectly in sync. Overall this is a fairly well balanced wine with flavors of sweet cherry, plum and currants present on the palate. Medium weighted and smooth consistency with a solid structure and a fairly agreeable level of complexity. This wine should drink well over the next few years. No reason not to enjoy it now.

A solid B+ rating and somewhere between a B+ to A- on the value scale. Recommended buy.

2003 Domaine Brusset Côtes du Rhône Laurent Brusset - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (8/23/2006)
WIML89,PURPLE88,NOWA,WS87

Tasted August 23, 2006 at home. Opened and served immediately in a Speigelau Authentis Magnum glass. Raspberry color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Slightly tight nose of Kirsh, maybe some smoke, pepper, a mix of berries with a base of forest floor. Flavors of raspberries, sweet cherries, red berries and maybe a little red currant. Medium acidity, integrated tannins. Light to medium body. Good balance overall. Drink now through say 2009. Based on my local price of $14.45 a bottle I’d say the value here is between recommended and highly recommended. (89 pts.)
