| 2001 Château Saint-Cosme Gigondas Valbelle - Gigondas, Southern Rhône, Rhône, France (8/30/2004)
~$45-55. This is the high-end cuvee from Saint Cosme and is not made in all years.
Lots of woodsmoke and black pepper in this wine in its very young state. It has all of the right stuff to improve with aging so don't drink any of these for at least two years (or without a significant decant). Very nice mouthfeel and concentration.
[Opened at Pinot Brasserie, Las Vegas, 8/28/04. Served with a main course of lamb, beef or chicken] (91 pts.)

| | Not a great showing, too bad. I've had this wine twice, once upon release and once about a month ago. The first bottle was much better than the second. I'll keep my hands off for a while. | | | |

| I agree this is wonderful wine, but the last bottle I had was closed for business big time.
I think I will revisit in 2-3 years. Glad yours was a 91 pointer.
I don't usually do points but the bottle I tasted on release would have been more like mid-90's.
The last bottle too closed to tell.
Anyone taste the 98 Valbelle of late??

| | Dain - I wish I had some to taste. The '98 Valbelle is really good but was hard to source due to low production. | | | |

| | Never had the Valbelle (actually never even heard of it before...) - but I did pop a 2000 St Cosme Gig last night and my it was drinking quite good (where previously - 6+ months ago it had been very tight and tannic)...I was wondering (doubting?) if this wine would ever come around and live up to its hype (I bought a case at about $15/bottle - don't remember exact price - but it was good). Certainly more peppery then the average CDP - as gigs often can be - but certainly in a nice and not overpowering way...not very heavy bodied (very pinot like really...) but with vibrant black currant fruityness...and yeah some smokiness as well - along with the pepper...a real bargain I'm now thinking...shame I drank as many as I have already...wish I had more... | | | |

| Actually a better showing than the previous bottle but couldn't go higher with the score. This is the first bottle that we've had that is entering the "zone". It can certainly hold as well.
2001 Château de Saint-Cosme Gigondas Valbelle - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas (11/23/2007) This wine showed very well - seemingly ready to drink with all components nicely integrated. Very pure fruit and spice flavors with smoke on the finish. [Decanted 45 minutes before serving with good results] (91 pts.)
