13.5 % Alcohol
purchased for $42.

This is a wine that I have heard many many raves about so I was anxiously waiting to try one and cellar some more. I think Parker has rated it 94 or so.

Dark Purple in color. I was greeted with aromas of sweet berry, tar, spice. Earth and pepper joined the ever-present black fruit on the palate. This is pretty tannic now though and became tighter and more tannic as the night went on.

Despite what I have heard from many people, I do not consider this to be drinking well right now. The 98 was much more fruit forward and ripe and therefore drank much better young. Maybe I missed the window of opportunity, or maybe I have different tastes, but this needs plenty of time for the tannic structure to smooth out.

This has tons of potential and is one of the better 2000's I have tasted, but IMO the comparisons of 2000 to 98 are way off. 2000 is a year that should go straight to the cellar and did not drink the same young as the 98's did.

This is one of my favourite CdP's. I bought the 95, 98 and 2000 vintages. Haven't opened a bottle of the 2000 yet, thank you for the notes.

This wine is a keeper. I decanted and consumed over 7 hours. This wine started to flesh out a little after hour 4. Bright clean dark red in color, aromas of ripe bruised dark fruits, Kirsch, roasted meats, and underbrush. The palate reveals a medium-full bodied beauty that displays a rich wine loaded with a wealth of fruit, sweet tannins, and stunning focus at this stage. A finish that is long and sweet with the fine lingering taste of rose petals.

No disagreement with RP on this one 95 points.

Seek,
I agree. This is a wonderful wine. No arguements with Parker's 95 point rating. I just opened my first bottle last night and I loved it. I'm anxious to see what the rest of the bottle tastes like tonight. I will be looking to stock up on some more of these if I can find them at a good price.

Solid producer makes quality CdP and sells at reasonable prices. 'Nuff said.

Yup - I'm the Pegau pimp of the Southwest due to Spec's huge inventory of this wine. I have cases of it in my storage awaiting cooler temps to ship out to to various folks.

PM me if you're interested - it's only $38 and change at Spec's.

Winetex-

That's a nice price. You've started the old mill wheel spinning. I only have 2, but would like more.

I had this wine a few weeks ago - agree that this is a great bottle of wine. Here are my notes:

Dark, dark, dark! Wow, what a color. A nose of smoke, game, densely ripe red and black fruits was there, but it was packed in so thick, I had to concentrate to really appreciate the complexity and density of the wine. Sweet fruit on the palate with very fine and ripe tannins, this wine was very good on Day 1, better on Day 2 and tremendous on Day 3. The real deal - 94pts.

Enjoyed this last night at the Napstravaganza farwell dinner, and it surprisingly didn't show particularly well. Winetex thought it an off bottle, and I believe she said it was the worst showing she has ever seen with this wine. It was all about black pepper, and not much else last night.

A 3-4 year old Chateauneuf showing some spice but no fruit? Probably not much on the nose either?

I haven't had this wine in over a year, but it sure sounds like the classic shut-down to me. Hands off for the next few years, I guess.

Yup, probably classic shut-down. We were concerned about some off odors not usually present with this wine when we opened the bottle.

I'm going to open another soon for some further research.

Had the '01 tonight and it was excellent. Loads of plum, cloves, black pepper, mocha (on the nose only) and earth. Tannins were burly and acidity fairly high, both matching the fruit. Give this a good 4-12 years. 93 pts.

From the Denver Offline:

“Stanky” Chewy, tannic and highly concentrated. Lots of anise, raspberries and cherries in this one. Monstrous. Multi-dimensional. Can be drunk now, but I’ll be curious as to how it evolves over the next 3-4 years. 94 pts. My WOTN.

This wine could be great for a long time, but I think I might wait for another 3-4 years to try it again.
