Had this last night with ojeffso & Revlis. This was supplied by Mr. ojeffso. 1st, & again, Thank You.

This is a really good bottle of Wine. Deep, dark red color. Almost like black ink. Nice flavorful Wine. Young & needs time. But, still I was able to enjoy it very much. It should get even better with aging.

The aroma is a sweet one. So beautiful, like candy. Nice, long, sweet finish. In a way, the sweetness of the Wine makes it so Unique. I really liked this Wine.

But, the Fruit (berry dominant) was hard to pick-out because of the tender age. Ojeffso believes that this is a 15-year bottle. Not going to argue.

Cost: About $30.00. I would be interested in picking up a 6-8 bottles of this Wine. Recommend it for the $$$.

Not going to WOW-you, but for $30.00 with a nice Dinner or even a nice occasion, it would complement very well.

Rating: 91+ (with potential for more---when ages).

the make up of this wine is normally 70% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon. i have a case of futures coming in at about $25 a bottle. i paid about $30 for this bottle. the bottle was opened fours prior to drinking and consummed over the next three hours.

inky dark opaque purple in color, slow thick legs, an expansive nose of berries, casis and licorice. i loved this nose. full bodied with excellent extration of black fruit and toast. excellent structure and balance, this wine should develop more complexity in years to come. nice integration of fruit and tannins and a very nice finish. this is at least 2-3 points better than the 1998. rp90-92, me92+

this wine is better than any 99 california cab, merlot or blend i have tasted in its price range. i am glad i bought a case as futures, but it is still worth the current price.

Agreed. Best wine of the three 2000 Bordeaux. The nose wasn't the biggest, but it definitely was nice and sweet.... if a nose could be "round" this nose was. Very beautiful palate.... I couldn't place the fruit palate other then it being a little ripe and sweet. ojeffso suggested that could be the cassis. I need a wine tasting game! :-)
Very well done, the vanilla oak was present, the acidity and tannins well integrated... Very nice wine. Of the three, I'll buy the most of this one even at $30/bottle.
Rev rates it: 91+

The 1998 Faugeres was one of the first Bordeaux that I seriously started buying in quantity. Whomever and whenever I serve it, everone always comments on it an says "this must be an expensive French wine". A crowd pleaser and a great bottle to have a nice slab of steak with. I am holding onto 3 of the 1998 & 1997. I never did buy the 1999 yet, both it and the 1998 are still available up here. This would be a fun inexpensive vertical to do in about 10 years. Glad to see the 2000 is a winner!

ojeffso2,
You mentioned in your thread that you open 4 hours prior to drinking and then consumed it over the next 3 hours. Would you say that the 4 hours of decanting was enough?

I'm serving this to some of the WS board members on Monday night and would like it to be ideal.

Thanks

i opened the bottle four hours prior, but only decanted about 30 minutes prior to drinking. if you can do both four hours prior, it should work.

I picked up a stray bottle from Stirling Fine Wines a couple weeks ago and finally cracked it open last night. I've got a 6-pack on futures waiting for me in So Cal.

Decanted for 4+ hours before taking my first real glass.

If this is any indication of wines in this category, we're in for a real treat with other 2000 bottlings.

The wine was a deep, dark purple almost black color in the decanter. Fairly muted nose of mineral, dark fruits, and licorice.

On the palate, the wine demonstrated a low sugar blueberry mocha milkshake with a fabulous creamy 10 second finish.

In the first 2 hours of drinking, the acidity remained farily low. However it kicked up a bit on the last glass and a half, giving me hope for some serious bottle aging.

I can't wait to see what 8-10 years of bottle-aged complexity can give to this wine. It can only get better.

I bought my futures at $23 bottles where I would consider this an outrageous bargain. The current price of ~$35 (give or take $5) makes it more of a difficult decision. Compared to most $35 california cabernets though, this represents a much better bargain.

Without a doublt, this is a buy at any price under $30.

While it's drinking very well right now (with plenty of air time), I would imagine it'll go 10-15 fairly easily. As long as the components stay where they are (power, fruit level, etc.) this should be a superb bottle with the added bottle age complexity.

RP claims the drinking window to be 2006-2018.

Getting a head start on the TAA guys

Drank from a Vinium Bordeaux along with two Merlots, one from Sonoma and one from Chili.

On the nose there was a strong herbal presence that was paired with sweet tobacco and new leather with the slight aroma of toast. The wine is full bodied with thick tannins. In the mouth there are earthy and mineral flavors. The finish is solid with a hint of fresh cut grass. Overall this is a good wine but the utter lack of any fruit flavor what so ever troubles me. Perhaps after the harsher aspects settle the subtleties will shine, but only time will tell. Unfortunately I am not as impressed as others are but I admit that stylistically this is not one of my favorite types of wine.

I will revisit this tonight and play with the temperature to see if I can get more of the sweet fruit to come out and play. It was there but hiding under the skin. BTW Structurally This wine is fabulous - like a marble statue, strong but elegant and made to last.

TCK 88 - now
In the future -who knows

Edit Revlis - if you read this, here is an example of herbs on the nose that I didn't find to be a flaw - instead they added to the complexity.

tck-you said it all. structually this wine is fabulous. when drinking young bordeaux you look for structure, balance, integration of fruit and tannins, etc.

there is plenty of fruit packed in there, but right now this wine is way too young to appreciate. right now you are looking at potential.

Agreed - there is plenty of fruit there. I find that with many Bordeaux, the fruit is just hidden behind the tobacco and tannin.

Although there are some exceptions, one should not expect any sort of fruit bombs in most Bordeaux (like you'd find in CA or Aussie wines for example).

ojeffso- I opened this up last night and took your advice. I decanted for about 2 1/2 hours before friends came over. I poured a glass for mrs and me after that time. Mrs tasted first and said something was wrong with the wine.

Nose was beatiful, sweet with herbal presence.

Color deep dark red. I could only taste very harsh tannis however. Actually could not drink it.

Not to worry. I poured wine back into the bottle and left open another 2 -3 hours. I then resealed with vacu vin cork.

Today 12/29 I opened again and had a completely differant experience.

The tannis calmed down enough to drink. Beautiful, complex, huge wine. Blackberry, tar, very earthy flavors. Slow viscous thick legs, and long finish.

Although I don't pretend to know nearly as much as many regarding how this wine will age, my impression is once the tannins become silky, this will be an amazing wine. Right now 90...could be 2-3 points better over time.

2000 Château Faugères - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (4/28/2007)
WIML91,WA91,WS91

Tasted April 28, 2007 at an offline. Opened and decanted about 2 hours before serving. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black berries, plums and tar. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and plums. Light to medium acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Although starting to emerge from its’ cocoon I’d recommend holding. I’ll open my first bottle in 2010. (91 pts.)

I think Ojeffso said 2008 so that's what I'm sticking to for bottle #1.
