Garnet red to an orange rim with some bricking. Aromas of smoke, barnyard, bacon, leather, red fruit, and pencil lead. An all-around complex wine with nose following through to the palate and adding smoke to the mix. 60+ second finish. Delicious. 96 points.

From the Magnum party in New Orleans:

What a special treat it was to be able to taste this. Some light bricking around a nice dark red core, there is a big nose showing strawberries, cherries, spice, and brush. Still tannic and young, with a good gripping palate and complex flavors showing some coffee and light chocolate notes. The finish on this wine is simply phenomenal, going on seemingly forever. A beautiful wine, 96 points.

Eric, are we having a tasting note battle or something?

Nice notes. Now that I priced the 1989 Haut Brion (ouch!) and know I will never be buying any, I am jealous!

My birthday treat.
As noted above, a nice dark red wine, but some bricking at the edge which in reality kind of suprised me. On opening this smelled like a big ripe, lush young California cabernet, but boy did it evolve over two hours in the decanter. Medium bodied with ample fruit, but I honestly expected more here on the palate. In the complexity department this wine is just a dazzling display of red and black fruits, earth, leather, flynt, cedar, asian spices, and on, and on, and on. Spectacular long finish that went on for minutes. Truly a great wine, but not in the league of '82 Pichon-Lalande for my tastes. 96 points.

We decided to open this last night to celebrate our 3rd anniversary. It didn't disappoint.

We poured this into the decanter immediately upon arriving at the restaurant and poured a small taste for ourselves. The nose just shot out of the glass; tobacco, spice, cherry, cedar, and more. In a word, WOW. The first sip was great, nose follows through on the palate and it struck me as one of the most put together and seamless wines I've ever had. Incredible feel and finish. We set aside for about 30 minutes and poured a full glass. It actually seemed to have closed down since our initial taste. We continued to drink over the next 2 hours and at about the 90 minute mark it really opened back up and was singing. Everything from the first smell and taste was there and then some. this wine is just at the beginning of it's drinking window. If you are going to open one, give it 1 1/2 -2 hours in the decanter. An incredible wine that will be hard to beat.
