tasted 16/06/2003

Decanted for one hour.

Colour: Quite vibrant red.
Nose: the best nose of the night! Sweet maraschino cherry, leather and chalky notes all evident. As the wine opened up, cola , spices and more sweet cherry notes came through- also some tree sap (?).
Palate: Impressive mouth structure with the tannins creating and amphi theatre of flavours (sort around the back and mid palate areas.) Acids were still very tight and thus seemed to pull flavours back through the mouth.
Overall: Another impressive wine for the night. However this wine doesn't exhibit the ability to go another ten years. The tannins and acids were already intergrating quite well. 91 points.

I usually like wines from this producer but this one didn't fire me up.

1996 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (11/24/2006)
A nicely rounded, primary and balanced wine that was a bit hollow through the midpalate. It drank well but will probably continue to improve. (90 pts.)

'96s are really just starting to come together, from what I hear. I've got a few of these and will hold them for a few more years.

David,

This is one of maybe two wines were Shannon and I didn't agree (a bit). wine+art, vintage and myself all thought this wine was drinking remarkably well for being so young and zero decant time. Here's my note from the same tasting:

1996 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (11/24/2006)
Dallas Offline with Winetex (Amici's in Carrollton, TX): WIML93,WS91,WS92

Tasted November 24, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of plums, blackberries, coffee and graphite. Flavors of plums, blackberries and cassis. Good balance. Drinking remarkably well for such a young wine. Drink or hold. Should hold for many years to come. (93 pts.)

And you had the same bottle? Interesting.

What can I say - must be her Champagne palate!

Maybe it was the food combos. I thought the Troplong was better.

Nuttin wrong with a champagne palate. Generally Joe and I are fairly close on our ratings.

I am not surprised the nose was WOTN. If medals were given for a nose alone,
96 PB would earn platinum.

That is a lot of money for the mags. I have 4 750's in the cellar but have not tasted this vintage yet. Probably needs at least another 5 years to reach the secondary stage that I enjoy.
