| Not exactly a tasting note, but thought I'd cut/paste the following post I made in "what are you drinking":
Tasted single blind to me, double blind to my girlfriend and her mom:
2002 Ramey Jericho Canyon
2003 Seavey
2003 Pavie
Thought this would be an interesting exercise... and it was. The Seavey showed very well, much more open, fruity and drinkable than a typical young Seavey -- a very, very nice wine already quite pleasurable. The Ramey was solid as usual, always nice to drink.
As for the '03 Pavie, I must say the "controversy" over whether this smells or tastes like bordeaux is totally absurd -- it screams bordeaux (okay, maybe modern, right bank bordeaux) from the first whiff. All three of us instantly nailed this as a bordeaux (again, blind for me and double blind for the other two tasters who only knew we were drinking red wine; I did not offer my views until after they'd both smelled and tasted all three wines and formed their opinions). No question, we were all absolutely certain of this on the first sniff and again on our first sip. The more interesting questions are: (i) is it a great (or potentially great) wine, and (ii) how does it compare to other recent vintages of Pavie? Parker's notes compare it to '00 Pavie ("[t]he 2003 Pavie ... is closest in style to the 2000, but slightly more evolved and exotic"), while I found it much closer to the '98 and '99. It doesn't at this point have quite the intensity or richness of the '00, and to my palate I didn't find the '03 "exotic" in any pronounced way. Nor, as some critics have claimed, is it over-the-top, pruney or raisiny. I think it will take 6-8 years to integrate and come into focus and for the tannins to mellow a bit, at which time I think it will be a terrific wine, as good or slightly better than the '98 and '99 but probably not achieving the same level of greatness as the '00. ---------
Anyone else tried the '03?
Edit -- Day two on the '03: I semi-retract my "not exotic" remark. It's now drinking like a slightly more exotic version of the '99. This will be a fantastic wine in 6-8 yrs.

| I opened one of my 2 bottles of the Ramey Jericho Canyon last Jan/Feb and was very pleased - I remember it being very intense with great fruit - perhaps a bit tannic - but otherwise no details as it was one of a number of bottles we opened and drank that night and I was not in - how shall we say it --a critical mode... (I'll wait a bit on my remaining bottle...at least another year I'd say.
I also have some 98 & 99 Pavie and have yet to open either (2000 & beyond got way to rich for me...),,,any thoughts on recommended drinking windows for the 98 & 99...I'm considering one perhaps for Thanksgiving...(or another very special wine drinking occasion)...? thanks.

The '99 may improve even further, but is drinking very well right now. I've had it a couple times in the past year. The '98 is pretty tannic and tight and I'm not planning on opening another bottle for at least 3-4 years. If you open the '99 I'd decant for at least an hour or two. A bottle we drank over several nights recently was even better the second and third day.

| | mmmm...I'm really salivating at the thought of opning one of these baby's sometime soon. That the 99 would be ready before the 98 comes as no surprise. Thanks for the rec! | | | |

| I sacrificed one of my bottles for my friends (fellow moderators) on Saturday night.
I decanted the wine for about 2 hours before people were allowed to dig in. Whoever says this wine doesn't taste like bordeaux either doesn't drink much bordeaux or had a variable bottle - this wine screams ripe bordeaux (like many of the 2003s I've had so far).
Give this puppy at least 10-15 years in the cellar and I think it will be awesome. 98-100 points awesome I'm not sure about, but it will be delicious.

| Juggs,
I believe you are looking at the Macquin -- which is still probably a very good price and an excellent wine. But their price on the big boy is $180. (I would have maxed out my CC if it were $85, and I don't even drink Bordeaux.) | | I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland. -- Woody Allen

| | Local Costco has the 03 Pavie for $155...I'm awflly tempted - though this is quite a bit more then I ussually ever spend for a bottle of wine. It seems priced well however considering...so for those who have tried it or know the wine should I bite? | | | |

| | I filled out and and had the slip (for one) at Costco yesterday...then I saw the line at the cage for pickup and just slipped it into my pocket...perhaps if they still have some after the holidays I'll buy one...if not...well I'll have $155 to spend on something else (lots of beer for instance...) | | | |
