| Awesome Cabernet-based wine!
I am a sucker for Montrose. Along with Haut-Brion it is one of the two Left Bank wines that I really 'get' and boy, do I get it.
This is a dark monster. Black, black cherries and cassis mixed with steak tartare, leather, and shoe polish (in the best sense) on the palate -- the nose is the same although slightly reticent -- turn into a tannic (fine tannins) finish that last nearly a minute. Obviously, I never had the '70 or '90 very young (I was born in '79) but this is better than the '95 was very young... but cut from the same cloth. On a night where everything was showing well (and there was Cheval Blanc, Lafite, 2 Marcassins, etc on the table) this was my WOTN. 94.5 with room for improvement over the next 15-20 years. It should last much longer than that. | | I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland. -- Woody Allen

| | Pulled the cork and WOW! This is what I remember from a couple of months ago. AWESOME young Bordeaux. But as this decanted… it closed down a bit. Red, black, purple fruits leather, tar, rare beef(?) especially in the beginning. If you are going to drink this, drink this now or in 8+ years. 94.5 and WOTN for a half hour, then down to a 94 or 93.5 | | I can't listen to that much Wagner. | | I love Haut Brion, and though I don't have any Montrose (except for a lone bottle of 1990 I received as a gift), I have some Calon Segur 2003. Hope it lives up to the hype of the other St. Estephes in 2003 (Cos, Montrose). | | | |

| | Yes, I know, but if you have the time and inclination to post on WD, you may be able to drive him back this way. | | | |

I can't. I received personal request from the board owners to NEVER join that board and I usually honor good requests.

But....I miss Board-O and his dry wit. | | http://NothingControversial.com

| I missed Bored-O's exit as well - great shame - he will certainly be missed....(and I don't even know WD forum? ah well...I spend more time sipping then on forums these days anyway...)
I too love the St Estephs - though I ussually go for the cheaper ones like Orms de Pez, Haut Marbauzet and Lafron Rochet. I did snag some 03 Montrose, Calon & Cos...just a very few bottles of each and probably half my total allotment of 03s that I purchased (very few...and that will be the way with me for Bordeaux perhaps from here on out...)...haven't even had them delivered yet and wouldn't think I'd be opening them for a couple of years or ten....still nice to hear how scrumptious the Montrose will be...(I still have some 96 I haven't touched yet...)

| Had this for the 1st time the other night and it was AWESOME. It is the color of tar and black ink. THe one thing that stood out for me in this wine is the thickness in the finish. It was like someone was slathering the back of my throat with crushed blackberries. The acidity really made the fruit truly balanced and powerful without being over the top and clumsy. Do not bother doing food with this wine. It is a meal in itslef. The length of the finish was 40+ seconds. Wish I owned some of this. 95pts.

| | I miss Board-O as well... but he likes to age his wine a LONG time. He has not even touched his own 1982 Mouton! Ya know, if you age a wine 24 years, you might want to taste it somewhere along the line. And this was not a case of a singleton - as I recall he has a case of it. | | | |

| he brought 1990 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Cedres to offline, I liked it more than he did...
The wine was probably too young for him
