In contrast to last week's bottle of 1990 Pavie Macquin, I opened a bottle from the 1989 vintage this weekend. There are some similarities yet the wines are different, as one might expect from two high quality vintages.

To recap the 1990, I found it very ripe and almost raisiny, with a roasted fruit character and an initially prominent acidity, with good body and length.

The 1989 has a similar nose without the overipe roasted notes, showing ripe red raspberry, black cherry, anise or is it tarragon, and some smoke. Very nice.

The palate offfers more red fruits and a fresher fruitiness than the 1990, along with some earth. The Merlot really shines through the cepage. The acidity is better behaved and the body is not quite as fat as the 1990 while the 1989 tannins are nicely resolved with a soft mouthfeel.

Overall, this is a very nice and satisfying St. Emilion that is drinking very well now after getting some air time. I would rate it one point higher than the 1990, but fans of the roasted style of 1990 may prefer it more.

  • 1989 Château Pavie Macquin - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (3/24/2007)
    Clear dark ruby in color; Raspberry and spice aromas with leather flavors. This wine showed few signs of secondary characteristics. It had a velvet texture as Steffen notes but not overly complex. Good but in need of integration. (90 pts.)
