Classic young Bordeaux. Open and expressive with tobacco, cassis, mint, and chocolate covered black cherry. Long finish. Drinking very well now. I don't have enough experience to know when/if this will shut down and how it would re-emerge. 92

how were the tannins and acidity on the 2003 lascombes? quite a few low and mid level 2003 bordeaux i have tasted seemed to have mild tannins and were lacking in the acidity department.

ojeffso,

As a drinker of more CA Cab than Bordeaux it is difficult for me to say on a relative scale. However, the tannins were soft and this was lower in acidity than many Bordeaux I've had. Comparing it to similarly priced wines from other vintages, this certainly did not have the acidity or structure of something like a '95 or '96 Sociando-Mallet. As I said, this was drinking well -- I don't know exactly what that means in ters of the wine's total life, but it was the opposite of tight/closed.

sounds very similar to most of the other 2003's i have tasted. the only two that have really stood out were the faugeres and peby faugeres.

Had this last night. As whiner says, yes the tannins are mild and the acidity on the low side, but it's drinking beautifully now. Not sure how well it will age, but for $40 it's a very nice value imo. FWIW I thought the '03 was better than the '01 and '02 which are pretty good wines.

Thanks for the notes. I picked a couple up from Costco and was wondering when it might be time to open them.

I think this wine is fun now. Decant and drink over a long dinner and it will evolve and show it's potential. Not sure how long this will last. It may shut down soon.

Have a bit, so one for the sake of science

Decanted for several hours with a small pour in the glass to see how it is right from the bottle. Very primary, not closed. Lots of oak showing and the tannins are quite prominent. Day 2, things seem the same. The acidity is low (as would be expected for a hot vintage), but the alcohol is not too noticeable. The tannins are very noticeable and drying and stick to your teeth. The thick grape skins are responsible for this I am told. Good fruit and tannin for ageing. Based on several 03's I have tried I think this vintage will benefit from ageing and not be as charming early as the 90 vintage was.
