i bought a case of this for $24 a bottle on release. parker gave this wine a 93 and suggested drinking from 2005-2025. he called it one of the wines of the vintage. i was planning on waiting a few more years, but noticed a post on the squires board praising how well this wine was drinking now. i drank it over two nights and decanted for about 30 minutes on the first night. notes were consistent for both nights except the wine was more approachable on the second night.

dark opaque purple color with thick legs. tight nose of black currant, mineral and tobacco. this is a full bodied mouthful of black fruit and a sweet tobacco and coffee finish that was more apparent on the second night. excellent balance, great backbone and ferocious sweet tannins. very enjoyable, but i will wait a few more years before opening another bottle as this wine should gain more complexity with bottle age. me93

the 94 pontet canet is still available for a reasonable price in the secondary market and well worth it.

I have to agree with ojeffso's notes. I didn't get the coffee finish, and I got a wonderful grape must sense on the nose among the other things he mentioned. I also agree that it'd be worth waiting a few more years to open more of this. (had this a little over a week ago at a small dinner party we hosted).

It should be noted that I received this bottle care of latour67 in a grab bag swap at the VC Rocks at Equinox event this past March.

I'd rate it just a notch down below ojeffso & Parker --92 TJ points

(Note-- ojeffso, where can I get more?? )

Tasted at the Sept. 2004 BAWE Bordeaux Tasting...

Very green and vegetal, the palate is actually very nice in texture, but the overall flavor impression of one of green bell peppers and unripe fruit. Rather unpleasant.

sounds like you tasted a poorly stored bottle of wine. we opened this wine at poker night during the summer and it was still excellent.

1994 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Decanted ½ hr. Dark cassis nose with graphite, earth, and a caramel edge. Deep, black cassis flavors, with some cherry at the core, that are subdued by prominent layers of graphite, smoke, minerals and some tar. Fine but significant tannins are still firmly in control with a little more fruit appearing on the back of the palate followed by a good finish. S89 7/7/2006

I too picked up a few bottles as futures for a low price, but have not opened any yet. I am more bullish on 1994 Bordeaux than others, so perhaps it is time to open one up.
