2001 Chateau Monbousquet St.-Emilion (WIML90,WA91,WS89)

Tasted May 21, 2005 at home with a dinner of Grilled Lamb. Purchased from COSTCO for $39.99 per 750ml. 13.5% alcohol by volume. Tasted from Spiegelau Authentis Magnum glasses. Splash decanted and tasted. Decanter was placed in cellar for 1 1/2 hours before next tasting. Tasted over the next 2 1/2 hours for a total of 4 hours tasting.

Color was purple, clear hue throughout. The nose was good from the start but continued to improve slightly over the entire tasting period. The palate was steady throughout the tasting period. Nose was very appealing, running from chocolate and smoke to black currants and dried herbs. Tannins were firm and acidity was bright and refreshing...a nice balance from the first pour to the last. The palate was tight, very tight, but did eventually give up some red cherries, herbs, rhubarb and eucalyptus. Hold for at least two more years before trying again. Good Monbousquet and a recommended buy for you St. Emilion lovers in the crowd. For the point chasers in the group let’s guesstimate this wine right between the WS and WA reviews at 90 pts. Solid effort.
Joe-----Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

sounds great but for the money i think i am going to look for more 2001 clos les lunelles. the CLL was a bit cheaper (earlier this year) but might have gone up based on the little bit of buzz it got.

btw, good job clubbing that baby seal

I picked this up from Costco and opened last night, it's up to $45 now .
Inpenetrable red/black color. Nose reveals hot road tar, tobacco, black fruits, iron, and black olives. Full bodied, excellently balanced, black fruit and minerals on the palate, with a nice long finish showing good tannic structure, but even at this young age it is nicely integrated making for a nicely approachable wine. Drink now or hold for 10. Probably underrated by a point or two IMHO, 93 pts.

They still had some in Rhonert Park a few weeks ago. I might have to wonder back and pick some up. Stealth, how was the cork on the one you bought?

Perfect. Though they've been there a while, the wine isle at our Costco is cooler than most local retailers shops, even on the hottest days of summer.

They've had this at my local Costco but I haven't been really tempted to pick up any. I might have to go buy a bottle, just to try.

It's a nice wine, arguably a buy below $40 for the QPR. I've had a number of '01 St. Emilion wines, including Pavie, Pavie Decesse, Magrez Fombrauge and Tertre Roteboeuf, all of which were better than the '01 Monbousquet but of course significantly more expensive. the '00 Monbousquet is a big step up from the '01 Monbousquet and prices are starting to creep down on the '00 (e.g., Wally's had it for $69.99 at their tent sale recently).

thanks for the info. i'm waiting to see how the 03 faugeres is. i bought a nice stash of 375's, 750,s and mags. i am anxious to try it because if parker is right this will be one hell of a qpr and i will be buying more.

FWIW - I've had all three Faugeres bottlings and the Faugeres was probably the best value of the three. All were good - the Cap is an very good wine and worth the daily drinker price, the Peby is a total hedonist turn-on but may not be worth the price tag while the Faugeres sits right in the middle at an extremely fair price and is an excellent wine.

Be sure to try one of your 375s soon after receipt and give it about 30 minutes of air. You'll be very impressed.

No I haven't. I have had a number of '01 St. Emilions though, I liked them a lot for early to mid-term drinking, lots of nice cedar, tobacco, ripe red fruits, and elegance. Most (Angelus the exception) aren't thick like a typical Perse wine, but they are enjoyable.

The above quoted $70 for the '00 is a good buy, I'd be tempted...again.
