No decanting - right into the glass. Color is still a nice opaque ruby-garnet with slight bricking. The nose is tremendous with candied plums, figs and cherries all accented by strong Asian spices, cedar and leather tones. The palate is very deep with very sweet (almost port-like) plum, cherry and fig with plenty of spice. There are still drying tannins on the finish which lingers on quite nicely. This wine seems to be at full maturity and will likely last for at least a decade (or more) with proper storage. Having recently had the 83 Lafite and 83 Pichon Lalande this just reinforces in my mind how good the 82’s really are. The added depth, sweetness, and palate complexity are just wonderful (and the 83s are no slouches by the way). I thought I was out of 82’s but found some Cos buried when I was pulling stuff to get it ready to go into the new cellar. I only recently started to really track my inventory which will most likely prevent surprises like this….too bad. I like surprises like this.

I put everything into a spreadsheet before Cellar Tracker got launched. I started to input (from memory) into Cellar Tracker one day, but have yet to finish. I like my spreadsheet since I can do all kinds of stuff like pivot tables and even do trend analysis and some stats. Geeky engineer stuff. Sometimes I scare myself.

rmkam, there is pivoting on CellarTracker. (The summary reports.) Plus, if there are other reporting options you want, please let me know.

a few years ago there was an article in decanter describing how parker overrated the 1982 bordeaux vintage. decanter claimed many of the wines lacked the acidity to age. the 82 cos d'estrournel was their prime example.

Thanks Eric. Does CT have an import feature?

out of curiosity, do you agree with him or decanter about the 82's in general?

No, I don't agree as I just had a bottle and have first hand observation from the experience. I am sure some of the lesser 82's are in decline, but the Las Cases, Lafite and Mouton are still very young (I have only had the Las Cases and agree with this ). Now, if we are talking 40+ longevity, maybe the Decanter article has some merit, but is that a bad thing? I mean not for those that actually want to drink the wine. The 1990 vintage also has this rap (and I just had a 90 Cos and it was great, not sure how long it will go, but it was not in decline). What about the 47 Cheval Blanc? Also a very hot vintage. This may give hope to the likes of 82 and 90 (if one wants to age them that long). What is in store for the 03 vintage?

Final thought. Which do you want in your cellar today - and 82 or an 86? 86 will live longer than 82 (MHO), but will the wines ever be as beguiling?

Also can't tell if OJ is just posting a statement or if there is agreement with the statement.

just posting a statement. the actual article was in an issue in the late 90's. maybe about 97 or 98. keep in mind, decanter represents the british way of looking at bordeaux, which means, you buy the wine and cellar it for your grandchildren to enjoy.

thanks for the response. seems like the british wine establishment will do whatever they can to disagree with parker sometimes.

Medium-dark garnet colour to a slightly browning rim. Gorgeous nose of blackberry, lead pencil, cedar, spice box, camphor. Medium-full bodied, very complex wine, with replays from nose. Long, long finish, 50-55s, with cedar and lead pencil notes. 95 points (05/13/2005).

I am glad I found this thread. I will be having my first '82 Cos this weekend. I hope I get all the descriptors that RP and others talk about. I will certainly report back with my thoughts.

Brought this to an excellent rest. in Rochester, NY this weekend and it went beautifully with the tasting menu my father and I chose.

Quite dark and crimson in color with that classic aged Bordeaux nose upon opening. No decanting. This wine was consumed over a 2 hour period and never let up. In fact it gained weight as the night progressed.

The wine delivered an abundance of black fruits, food friendly acidity with plenty of earthy forest floor with more tobacco than I would have expected. As time progressed the nose took on a fresh cranberry and violet undertone that added 1-2 pts to my final score. an excellent wine that IMHO will not get better. Obviously each bottle will be different, but I rate this bottle 93-94pts. A true pleasure to drink and I hope to try it again.

I had a great bottle of this last night. This particular bottle had been purchased and stored since release in a passive wine cellar.

This wine is still not mature. Excellent concentration but still noticeably tight on the palate. While still a fun wine to drink at current, I'd wait a few more years before opening another (from the same source).
