I bought 6 bottles of the 150 cases that Wine Exchange has unloaded over the last couple months. This was the second bottle I've drank, first had leaked and only had a mid-shoulder fill, but drank nicely and probably would have rated 88 points. Nice, but not 50 bucks nice....This 2nd bottle was a high shoulder fill (rest are into neck) and though was stained completely up the cork (these are supposedly direct from the Chateau and probably victims of the summer of '03), was much fresher than the first and drank a good bit better. Great funky nose initially supporting all the usual characters, well worn leather, black earth, a little iron, a little iodine, black fruits. Good balance, solid medium bodied palate, well integrated all the way though. Faded a touch with two hours air. I remember the first bottle doing this as well. All and all though a very nice, competent Bordeaux that went pretty darn well with a hunk of ribeye. 91 points on this guy. Looking forward to the last 4. Drink now though 2010+. I think the initial 50 cases went for 40 bucks, no doubt a steal at that price, a little iffy at 50.

Interesting. I was thinking of picking up some of these from that same sale as well. It makes me think I might of had a little trouble with some bottles shipping to Texas. Thanks for the note.

1988 Château Gruaud Larose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (6/19/2008)
WIML90+

Tasted June 19, 2008 at an offline.

Opened and served immediately. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Just a little horsey on the nose but doesn't detract really from the wine giving way to some notes of thistle, berries and some other subdued florals. Flavors of red berries and red cherries on the palate. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium to full body. Drink over the short term. (90 pts.)
