| $33.75 on the bottle, $110 on Winebid over a year ago. Foil spins, cork removed intact with wine staining only the bottom 1/8 inch of cork. I was definately apprehensive that this wouldn't be ready yet, though good notes do abound. Dark blood red in color, showing no signs of age, very slow, fat legs nearly devoid of color. Classic mature Bordeaux on the nose, man I needed one of these . Though somewhat closed, a good sniff of the Sommelier brings out plenty of beef blood, French oak, tobacco, signature pencil lead, some dirty truffles and deep red fruits. Actually the first sniff off the bottle after the cork popped made the eyes roll upward and an 'oh yea' could not be held back...just as I had prayed this would be. Floral tones, especially lavender emerged strongly with some decanter time. A nice bit of acidity on the tongue caught me off guard at first as there was no hint of citrus on the nose, but it is of the variety that only Bordeaux can seem to accomplish, a steak of acidity that melds in perfect harmony with the rest of the palate, impeccable balance being, of course, a signature. Big red juicy fruits control the well structured palate, the components of the nose are there as well as some spice, the wine is squarely medium bodied and a delightful medium plus finish paves the way to lingering tannins that suggest plenty of life and room for improvement in this finely tuned beauty. The Baron to me, has loads of charm for current drinking, but still promises some improvement potential ahead. My two notes that kept this wine from joining the profound few, though minor are worth noting. First, the fruit didn't quite have that crisp pop that the really great ones have and second, decanted the wine fell off noticably with about 2 1/2 hours of decanter time, fortunately there was only about 3 ounces left when this happened. I would not decant again. The wine was drank on its own with barbequed prime, aged filiet mignon and rigatoni bathed in butter and garlic/basil goat cheese. It matched perfectly the pairing. 95 points. One bottle left, would seek out more around a C note. | | | |

| - 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (5/5/2005)
Bordeaux and Tokaji Wine Dinner - Spec's (Rouge Restaurant; Houston, Texas): Very dense ruby with a bit of sediment (mine was one of the last pours). This bottle came out a private cellar direct from the Chateau and was extremely well-stored. Perhaps that is why this wine still seemed so young. It did have the classic Pauillac cedar and smoke on those nose with cassis a touch of anise on the palate. Stylistically it was kind of a brute and did not impress with elegance. Still a fine treat. Drinking well now but could last indefinitely. (94 pts.)

| | Gorgeous wine, cedar, smoke, black fruits, earth, hints of truffles, fairly fruity for a Pauillac (because of the vintage no doubt), very concentrated, lush wine. A real pleasure. Threw a fair amount of sediment. Why can't all left bank wines taste like this...? | | | |

| | This was one of the last bottles that I drank from my cellar before moving this year. Posessing ample body and depth it is a fine bottle of Pauillac. The 1989 is also outstanding. | | | |

Superb. Youthful appearance. Aromas of dark fruits, freshly brewed coffee, and tanned leather. Just a fantastic wine... brooding and dark with a swirling mass of rich, complex flavors: mineral, pencil lead, mocha capaccino; all kept buoyant by nice fruit and acidity. Tannins are incredibly sweet and smooth. Wonderful now, and I can't imagine me ever enjoying it more, but it has a long life ahead. (95 pts.)
