1998 Château Troplong-Mondot St.-Emilion (93 WIML) (A-)

Tasted this wine at an offline with the DAWGS. Brief notes only.

This wine speaks St. Emilion. When I was swirling it around in the glass I thought the wine’s profile was exactly the same as the 1995 Chateau Corbin-Michotte, only on steroids. Very nice aromas of tobacco, berries and a little bit of briar patch. Good mouthfeel. Flavors of red berries, cherries and just a little spiciness. A very youthful wine that won’t really start showing its’ stuff for at least another five years. If I found this on sale at retail I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up half a case. An excellent Bordeaux value.

I didn't bring it. vintage brought it. However, IIRC, I believe the release was somewhere close to $50.00 a 750ml.

I had the 1994 recently and thought it was closed. Are 1998s really ready so soon? I would have expected 10+ years before really showing. Granted the '94s are less accessible anyway...

Well, I did say "A very youthful wine that won’t really start showing its’ stuff for at least another five years."

Thanks. I was just trying to understand whether the 1998s are in a more open style that doesn't take so much time for the tannins to resolve.

  • 1998 Château Troplong Mondot - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (11/24/2006)

A good wine that is moving towards secondary flavors but not there yet. This wine had blackberry, coffee and river stone aromas and flavors along with a touch of licorice and florals on the finish. Drinking well now but has room to improve. (90 pts.)

I had this last week, dinner at Arcadia in San Jose.

92 points. Plum and smoke on the nose with some vanilla/oak notes. A nice hint of raspberry red fruit and very silky long finish. I have 4 more bottles, I suspect 2008 will be a good year to try another.
