last visit was to lenz. the last few times i was there, i left unimpressed and very disappointed because in the early to mid 90's lenz was making some good to very good wines. the last few times the whites were bland and the reds were over extracted unripe wines showing too much green and wood. the only very good wine i had tasted was the 1997 old vines merlot, but even five years ago it was over $50 a bottle and a poor value. this time things have improved.

2004 lenz gewurztraminer
2004 lenz white label chardoonay
2004 lenz gold label chardonnay
2000 lenz estate merlot
2000 lenz old vines merlot

the gewurz was pleasant, but not the value it used to be. the white label chard in the high teens was also just pleasant and not worth the price. the gold label chard in the low $20's was very good with nice oak treatment, but not overbearing, a nice wine for burg lovers. the 2000 estate merlot was very good and the best i have tasted since the 1995. it sells in the low $20's. the 2000 old vines merlot is no doubt an excellent wine, but if i remember correctly, goes for over $50 a bottle and is not better than what paumanok offers at a much lower price. still all the wines showed better than the past.

Jeff - Wasn't this the winery that purported to have beaten Petrus in a blind tasting?

That is correct...I believe it was the 1995 vintage, which we drank at the 'Smoke House' tasting a few years back...

yes. it was the 1995 lenz merlot that beat an off vintage of petrus in a blind tasting. still some feat.
