| first visit was to paumanok and i spent some time talking to the owner, charles massoud. he is a very passionate and modest man who wanted to talk more about the region than his own wines. five years ago, i found only paumanok and pelligrini making good to very good wines at acceptable prices. charles told me everyone on the north fork is catching up and the age of the vineyards is beginning to help. in addition, winemakers are not over extracting and learning how to use the correct oak treatment with the juice they are making.
2004 paumanok chenin blanc 2004 paumanok dry riesling 2002 paumanok merlot 2002 paumanok grand vintage cabernet sauvignon 2002 paumanok grand vintage merlot 2002 paumanok assemblage
the whites were pleasant, but nondescript. the reds were all very god to excellent. all the reds are made in a ripe bordeaux style with overtones of burgundy. these wines are all about complexity and secondary flavors. the 2002 merlot is available for about $16 in case quantities and is equal to anything you would find from bordeaux in that price range. i was told the wine was for immeadiate consumption, but it should hold its own over the next 4-5 years. the grand vintage 2002 merlot and cabernet were excellent and could be bought for about $36 in case quantities. both had more dense ripe fruit with the cabernet showing similarities to a bordeaux from graves. i thought the 2002 assemblage the best wine of all with similarities to a st.julien bordeaux. in case quatities this goes for about $33. if you are a wine club member, you receive 20% off the retail price. i think all these wines should get better over time and paumanok's wines in general should get better in the years to come. i highly recommend a visit to paumanok for people visiting the north fork of long island or the hamptons.

| Jeff,
Sounds promising. Do you see Paumanok as an aberration in Long Island wines? | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| | five years ago paumanok was well ahead of the curve. this time around i only tasted three wineries, but both pellegrini and lenz were making wines close to paumanok's level. after talking to charles massaud, owner of pauamanok, it seems many long island wineries are now making good to very good wines. | | | |

| I usually stop into Paumonok at least once a year, they are clearly in the upper echelon of east end wineries. I particularly enjoy their Late Harvest Riesling dessert wine, a little on the expensive side @ $30 375ml ,(compared to Aussie stickies). Nice lightly chilled.
The quality continues to improve on the east end, however they are still overpriced when compared to Cali, Australia and France. I guess economies of scale come into play. Most of the wineries will always be considered "boutique" affairs, due to their limited acreage/production.
