2002 Shinn Estate Merlot “Six Barrels Reserve”. North Fork of Long Island, New York. 13.2% alcohol. $34. 151 cases made.
A nice color – translucent medium to deep black cherry red. Lots of sweet but not excessive oak aromas go along with dried cherry and distinctive plum nuances. Herbal notes intrude in the mouth and harm the overall wine’s quality. A smooth, warm, and plush wine – even in its nose which of course is oxymoronic since smells can’t really be textural. A bit simple and oaky but its an enjoyable wine nonetheless. Acidity is on the high side but is well integrated regardless. 92% Merlot, 5% Cabernet, and 3% of a field blend consisting of Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot. Made from vines yielding 1.6 tons per acre, this wine was aged for 22 months in French oak. Drink now to 2009. 86 points.
