We stayed at Inn on the Twenty, and dined at Inn on the Twenty, all part of Cave Springs Cellars in Jordan. The inn is our favorite place to stay in the wine country. Service is outstanding and the rooms/suites are very large, well-appointed, and very comfortable. In addition to a large Jacuzzi, our room also had gas fireplace, but we had no need for the fireplace with temperatures in the mid to high 90s. The airconditioning was excellent and kept the room nicely cool. The restaurant is one of the very best in the region, and a great breakfast is included in the room rate. I can't picture staying anywhere else.
We saved Cave Springs for our final tasting, which was a mistake. We always taste our wines with the winery's Brian Kelly, but our last day there was his day off, so we tasted the wines below with the tasting room staff:
nv Brut, 12.5% alcohol, $25- Yeasty nose. Nice fruit. Best Niagara sparkler I've had. 88
2003 Riesling Cave Springs Vineyard, 11.5% alcohol, $30- Pear nose. Medium sweet. Nice fruit. 88
2002 Gewurtztraminer, 13% alcohol, $12- No nose at all, highly unusual for Gewurtztraminer. Harsh. Yech! 68
2002 Chardonnay Reserve, 14% alcohol, $20- Oak and tropical fruit nose. Harsh. Some fruit. 72
2000 Chardonnay Cave Springs Vineyard, 14.5% alcohol, $30- Pear nose. Some melon flavor. Thin. 74
2002 Cabernet Merlot Reserve, 13.5% alcohol, $30- Berry and leather nose. Dark fruit flavors. Light. 75
2002 Syrah, 13% alcohol, $25- Baked apple nose. Some smoothness. A little thin. 77
2001 Twenty Valley Select Late Harvest Vidal, 12.5% alcohol, $19- Honey nose. Sweet grapefruit. Needs acidity to balance. 87
2003 Riesling Icewine, 10% alcohol, $60- Lemon/honey/dried fruit nose. Perfect balance. 93
This is clearly one of the better wineries in the region and a must see for us, though there are clearly holes in their line-up. Unfortunately, since we missed Brian Kelly, we missed out on the ice wine vertical we usually do with him. |
