| This is a pretty property outside of Niagara-on-the-Lake proper. There is a cooking school and nice gift shop in the main visitor building, along with a large tasting room. We visited three weeks ago and met Joe Will, the winemaker and President, and tasted his wines with him. The wines:
2004 Barrel Aged Chardonnay, 11.5% alcohol, $12- Oak and tropical fruit nose. Light. 82
2004 Semi Dry Riesling, 10.3% alcohol, $11- Mineral nose. Light. 83
2003 Riesling Terroir, 10.8% alcohol, $15- Mineral apple nose. A little sharp. 82
2004 Gewurtztraminer, 11.9% alcohol, $13- Light perfumed nose. Simple. 79
2002 Cabernet Franc, 13.1% alcohol, $20- Musty dark fruit and cedar nose. Smooth. Just a little light. One of the better Cab Francs from Niagara. 85
2002 Merlot Terroir, 13.7% alcohol, $25- Cigarbox nose. Balanced. A little light. Soft. One of the better Merlots from Niagara. 87
2001 Strewn Three Terroir, 13.9% alcohol, $39- Tobacco and leather nose. Ripe berry flavors. Tannic. 86
2002 Strewn Three Terroir, 13.3% alcohol, $29- Muted tobacco nose. Light plum flavor. 83
2002 Riesling Icewine, 13.3% alcohol, $68- Honey/raisin/apricot/apple nose. Beautifully balanced. 93
2002 Vidal Icewine, 12% alcohol, $45- Flowers and dried fruit nose. Beautiful balance. 91
Strewn is clearly one of the region's better wineries. Their lower end wines are better than most other wineries' lower end wines and lower priced. Their higher end dry wines are probably priced a little lower than the better wineries' high end wines and of similar quality. Both ice wines we tasted were excellent. The Riesling's pricetag of $68 was a bit high for a 93 point icewine, but I saw some for considerably more. I don't believe we tasted an ice wine anywhere on this trip that I scored more than a 94. If you're in the region, I'd recommend a visit to Strewn. | | | |

| If anyone in Ontario likes the 2002 Vidal Icewine, it's on sale at the LCBO/Vintages outlets as of August 27th. $19.95 for a 200mL bottle, down from $25 originally. | | | |
