A number of forum members from this site and The Wine Spectator recommended a visit to this new winery. I'm glad they did. Considering the range of wines we tasted, this was probably the best winery we visited on this trip, not just in Ontario, but also the Finger Lakes. We tasted the following wines with a concerned and helpful Suzanne Janke:

2002 Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, 14% alcohol, $32- Oak and melon nose. Concentrated, rich, and young tasting, probably needing another year or two to mellow. Very uncharacteristic for the region. 85-88

2000 Stratus White, 13.5% alcohol, $40-
The color was a light to medium gold, lighter than expected for its age. It had the nose of an unoaked Chardonnay, with light pineapple flavors. It tasted like a young wine. 87

2001 Stratus Red, 13% alcohol, $38-
Musty red fruit nose. Berry flavors. 87

2002 Stratus Red, 13.5% alcohol, $38-
Berry nose. Acidity and backbone to age. 87-89

2001 Riesling Icewine, 10% alcohol, 200 ml, $37-
Apricot nose. Sweet, yet crisp. Excellent balance. 94

This winery is a must to visit if you're in the Niagara region. The building was constructed as ecologically friendly as possible. Wines are not pumped; the barrels are raised and the wine is transferred by gravity. The extensive glass in the building was designed to be very energy efficient. Stratus is striving to produce high end wines and succeeding from the start.

I hoped you'd like it there.

I haven't tried the 2002 Red - they haven't had it open - but I did enjoy their Gamay quite a bit (the $26 tag didn't hurt either). From talking to some folks, their 2002 Merlot ($55) is excellent as well.

I was very impressed by the whole facility. According to JL Groux, the winemaker, when they assemble the White (from Chard/Sauv Blanc/Riesling/Gewürz/etc) and Red (Cab Sauv/Cab Franc/Merlot/Gamay/etc) blends they have a soundproof room to try barrel samples without extraneous influences.

I saw the room, it was quite private.

Tawse Winery on Cherry Avenue in Vineland has also just opened, and is equally impressive.
